dude!!! its fucking CG...

ok its not really proof but there is a dude listed as the digital effects artist for "The Deep", and his other credits include "Shrek The Third", "Shrek 2", "Madagascar".....all CG movies. plus the dude who pointed it out to me is a digital animator also, so they kind of have an eye for it. once you are looking for it you can definitely tell. he pointed a couple other parts out also but im not 100% convinced by all of them so the only "for sure" one is where they show the submersible navigating around underwater...how could that not be CG unless they had a second multi million dollar submersible to film the other one miles under the sea

and obviously you havent seen the coral one if you are saying thats not CG, because thats the most obvious CG ever!!! they are zooming inside coral to show the different parts of it....clearly 110% CG...

CGI shots included those of the Mariana Trench, (what the poster above called the grand canyon on the sea bed-LOL), the Mid-Ocean Ridges, and other deep ocean landscapes where it was difficult or nearly impossible to shoot.

Non of the wildlife was CGI.

I know nearly all the people who made Planet Earth becuase my father is a wildlife filmmaker, and only the globe shots are CGI, all the meaningful wildlife shots are not.

^Im assuming he is talking about the "satellite" shots above the earth.

I dont recall the coral ref zoom ins...ill have to check for that again.

Maybe some of the deep sea stuff was CGI's, i have no clue.

You're welcome!

That question got asked of the producers a lot -- I wondered it myself when I first saw it. And they were adamant that they use NO CGI when putting it together.

SO i dont know. There is a "behind the scenes" diary of some sort out there that asnwer these questions

that link is for planet earth. i am talking about blue planet. the one only about the oceans. i have only seen tiny bits and pieces of the planet earth one on TV, i have no idea if theres any CG in it...

but the blue planet one uses cg in "the deep" episode as well as the "coral seas" episode.

sorry maybe i wasnt clear enough that i was talking about "blue planet" as opposed to "planet earth" i did state that but i didnt put it in quotes or anything

Ahhhhhh ok...so were talking about two entirely different things here...LOL!

I know what youre talking about, and yes, they do use CGI in that one. It is still dope though.

This one was done by the same people, but it took over 5 years to shoot...

oh yeah i still totally enjoy watching it, but i think the shots they use CG on are kinda unnecessary and so are the fake beeping sounds they associate with the glowing jellyfish lol. but yeah ive been meaning to watch the "planet earth" one, my buddy has it on BluRay should be pretty dope.

CG or not CG that is the question..

Regarding it being "too dark" to film underwater remark:

In one of the episodes, they filmed a pack of lions attacking an elephant. This sequence was shot entirely at night WITH NO LIGHTING. In the "behind the scenes" of that episode, they mentioned that they used newly developed special cameras, that only film in the dark, and the night vision is BUILT IN, so when they are filming there is no light at all around the camera, and the camera men sit there in pitch black dark, and the only way to see whats going on is to actually LOOK THROUGH THE CAMERA. So i'm thinking, if they have technology like that, I'm sure they can find ways to film in complete darkness in the deep ocean.
