Dj's are the ones who are suppose to give every artist a chance. I understand that every artist dont have the same level of talent; but what happened to the days of breaking a record. Nowadays everything is money oriented. Basically if you have a good "PROMO" budget you can get heard no matter what the talent sounds like. Who is really to blame for Hip Hop's stagnant state? I would like to focus on the dj. Here is what it comes down to. You have Big Name Dj's yelling on the radio and interviews about how "every artist sound the same" and "this aint real hip hop"; but they themselves refuse to break new records. They then blast the consumers for not having an ear for talent. Let's be honest, a lot of the artists out now are garbage. To even go further, a lot of internet/myspace artists are garbage as well. But they get further because they are most likely affiliated with the dj. I'm not knocking noone's hustle, but this is killing the artform.

For example, Boogie Down Productions would not have been heard if Red Alert did not give them the break they needed. Remember Mister Magic was frontin on them because he was down with the Juice Crew. He gave that chance to let the people decide and the rest is history and everyone involved became legends/icons. The last legends we had was BIGGIE & PAC respectively along with Snoop and the DPG. That was the last time records were being broke. I remember listening to Wu when Protect Ya Neck was still a demo. I still have it on tape actually. Those were the nineties and a different era they say. The people had their say. We actually made Jay-Z, Nas, Onyx, Das, Black Moon etc. But they are from the last golden era which was the nineties. Do you really think..and be honest..do you really think people are calling up the stations and requesting lil wayne songs left and right? Not to knock him or his hustle...but i doubt it. Dj's should break the records not me. How many times do you get an artist throwing his music on your page..self promotion is cool..but it would be a lot easier if dj's would break new artists.

Dj's be yelling but they aint telling. This goes to all dj's. Don't tell me that your tired of whats out now and how garbage it is..YOU have the power to change it noone else. Remember one thing..dj's and producers will always have gigs..artists won't. They are only good as their last jam..and who spins it. The underlying problem is that good artists are being kept out in the rain while these garbage emcees are sneaking through the back door. I'm not even going to mention payola..thats another blog for another day. But just give someone a chance..truthfully..if you think a song is hot give it some spin. Don't tell the artist " I like your music" then request a filing fee. BREAK THE DAMN RECORD!!!!!

This is 2009, which is not the same as when BDP was coming up. It is a COMPLETELY different ballgame now. Just like it's hard for you rappers to sell records in this day it's just as hard for DJ's to break records now. How are we supposed to break records when the fans can get the songs at the same time the DJ's can? The only way to break a record would be to have a strong personal relationship with an artist to the point where they will give you and you alone their new single. And to try to tell us that WE have the power to change what gets played is bullshit. Maybe in the clubs but not on the radio. I've worked for radio stations before and you have to adhere to strict policies on what you can play and what you can't. I'm not saying that DJ's are doing the best they can, but to pinpoint us for why the state of the music industry sucks is absurd. There's countless other reasons why we're at where we're at today.

Ohhhhh boy where do I start lol...This one strikes a nerve:

Let me focus on the mixes I do. I play the shit that's dope that gets sent to me. I also throw in classics and other shit that I have to pillage from various sources. But I've had long standing relationships with quite a few artists on here. Ones who send me shit fresh out the lab and I don't hafta ask for it. And I will support them thru thick and thin.

Now HERE'S what gets to me:

I've been a TRUE Bay Area DJ for 15 years. Zulu Nation since I was 16. Learned shit the right way and paid my dues the hard way. I've been suspended from corporate radio for playin Bay shit when it wasn't the "cool thing to do" and as mixshow director at another station I CONSTANTLY had Bay Area music in rotation by the mixers before the wave of Hyphy and radio shit hit again. But I swear to God, I hafta fucking BEG LIKE A BITCH to soooo many artists, many who post on here just for me to get some of their songs and God forbid a drop or two and MAYBE EVEN an acapella just so I can play THEIR SHIT and give them much needed exposure! My little mixes I do for the Siccness between here and various other links on blogs get around 500-600 downloads each time I do one. All I want is to help cats shine who I think are dope. But alot of the same people who post here and say they don't get alot of love from radio, are the EXACT SAME ONES that I hafta hit up like I'm some new cat on the block for material. I just don't get it.

I understand cats are busy. But if this is what you DO and you want to make this your lifestyle, then I'm sorry but cats like ME matter. We're the ones who play yer shit and don't ask for nothin in return but a little respect. Put me on a mailing list, send me some drops, hit me up from time to time etc. I don't think it's too much to ask.

I got new cats like Trey-C who hit me with new material, I ask for maybe a drop or the instrumental and guess what...I have it that same day or the next. And I'll play his shit each time he sends me somethin new because that says alot about his focus and drive.

I still get love from alot of Bay legends...Cats like Jay Tee, Coolio, Black C, Sean T etc will always hit me with material. I was having a convo with a friend from here a couple weeks ago and he said "maybe these newer artists just aren't as familiar with you...Why not ask them for drops, songs in your sig and hit em on MySpace to introduce yourself" etc. So I did that....Know how much I've seen from all of that? ONE ARTIST sent me a song.

Now I know what I've said may make a couple people on here think I'm talking about them personally....That ain't the case. There are atleast 10 artists/labels that I've been trying to get stuff from that I see nothing back from. And frankly it makes me feel like "fuck it". Why even TRY? I try because I honestly respect these folks and am a FAN of their music. Like REAL DJs are. Not the fake cat who's on a major radio station for a few months and could give 2 fucks about your shit in the long run.

Sorry for the rant. If I left anything out I'm sure I'll be back to post it up but I just had to get this off my chest. Funny thing is, I've said damn near the same thing on here before and it fell on deaf ears lol

*EDIT* I forgot to mention. People wonder why The South continues to shine. THE DRIVE....I get emails almost daily from artists or their management or their label asking if I need anything...And when I've asked for it, I got it. And I don't even PLAY South shit lol...Too bad

I think the author is on point and Mark 7's post was truth all the way around and I'd like to add another perspective on breaking records...

This is an article from The Smoking Section
Jermaine Dupri was off base when he said the DJ is dead.

In Hip-Hop, the DJ will never die.

The DJ is one of the pillars on which Hip-Hop was built, even coming before the MC. The DJ is as essential to rap as the guitar is to rock, as brass & woodwinds are to jazz. That role could never be filled by technological advances. And of course, bloggers will never show up @ the local club to spin records & provide commentary along with each track. Hell, bloggers generally don’t leave the house, do they?

But there was a time when the music played by Clue, Kay Slay, Drama, and other top tier DJs would be the “hot” song or sound for the coming weeks & months. If Flex dropped bombs over it, it was official. If Kay Slay brought it back two or three times & dropped one of his signature catchphrases, it was official. No questions asked. Even if it was new & you weren’t in tune with it, you listened to it several times to get your ass in tune, especially for those of us who breathe the music & not just listen to it.

When you think of Web 2.0 and relate it to where you receive your doses of what’s next, where do you go to get those songs & to whose suggestions do you listen? With the overwhelming amount of crap material out there, who do you look to for help sifting through it? When you want an unfiltered, non-payola opinion on an album or artist, who do you turn to?

Bloggers.

Many of us are members of some online forum where we stay current with the e-pulse to see who or what’s hot in music. You may check for _______ (insert blog name here) to clue you in and/or put the music on your plate. You might come see us for suggestions…or you might find your way into the comments section to exchange new material with like-minded people whose choices you’ve found to be correct before. Either way you end up online, normally on some blog, looking for it.

And that same boat is filled with it’s share of artists as well. Years prior, a new cat looking to get on would be happy to be featured a Clue tape, even @ the end. While the hand-to-hand “listen to my demo” process will never die between little artists, bigger artists & DJs, many upstart musicians have turned to more accessible online avenues like Myspace and Youtube. They incorporate email blasts into their grind, making sure to cultivate a mailing list of sites & bloggers. These upstarts know that if they’re featured on those sites they’ll gain new listeners much faster than they could otherwise. Why? Because bloggers have the ears for the new artists and a direct pipeline to perfectly matched audiences around the globe. And once the e-avant garde deems it worthy, larger avenues & flocks of followers preach it as the gospel.

So do you still check for the DJ? Do you run to the barbershop or the swap meet to cop the latest mixtapes in hopes of hearing the next big thing in good music? Or are you the one now going into the barbershop selling burned cds and tellin’ them what to listen for?

Let’s face it: For new shit, you’re more likely to go to eskay than Kay Slay.

“Blogs Are The DJ 2.0.”

And that’s the truth Ruth.
///////////////////////////

I think this is a valid point of view as well (not just because I'm a hip hop blogger). It's funny, you can basically take Mark 7's post and it's interchangeable with my situation as a hip hop blogger.

Cats in the Bay need to understand the importance of getting their music to people (DJ's and bloggers) who can expose it to potential fans.

damn, I'm genuinely surprised people dont jump at the chance to get you a track/drop. Especially considering how artists are always talkin about being on their grind etc. It's not hard to drop off a CD or mail an mp3.
