BARTLESVILLE, Okla. -- A woman who police say had been drinking heavily before she gave birth was charged with child neglect after the baby was born intoxicated and diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome.

Melissa Irene Tanner, 37, had a blood alcohol content of 0.29 percent when she gave birth June 30, and her daughter's was 0.21 percent, according to an affidavit by police. The legal limit for drivers in Oklahoma is 0.08 percent.

Hospital staff had to use an oxygen bag to help the baby start breathing and gave her medication to counteract any narcotics, according to the affidavit.

Tanner allegedly told police she and another person had consumed a case of beer and that she regularly drank during her pregnancy.

She was jailed on $30,000 bail. At a court appearance this week, Tanner was advised of her rights and ordered to return to court Aug. 5. She has not yet filed an application for an attorney or entered a plea, the court clerk's office said.

Sheriff's investigator James Wynn said the baby has fetal alcohol syndrome. The baby was placed in a foster home with a caretaker experienced in dealing with addicted infants.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists the syndrome as the leading preventable cause of mental retardation and physical deformity. The severity of her disability won't be known until she is older

yeah that shit is fucked up...my mom knew some lady that used to drink while she was pregnant. her kid came out all fucked up. i remember seeing the lady's kid when the girl was like 3 years old. the little girl had a growth problem because she was as tall as a six year old and talked really slow and slurred like she was drunk.

thats fucked up, i hate mothers like that, theres this lady thats a foster mom of a baby, and she gives the baby vodka to shut her up, and the baby is so used to it, she doesnt even like milk, its like the vodka is her milk, WTF is she gonna adopt a less then a year old baby for if shes gonna do shit like that?! this world is fucked up

Bad mother story.

Knew a girl who'd had about four kids by four different fathers until her last boyfriend got her a tubaligation. Bitch drank and smoked and did drugs through all her pregnancies and her kids all have weird deformities and learning problems. Her last kid is almost 6 and can only say the word CAR. Then again, when she lived with her boyfriend and the kid, she'd just throw the kid in his crib ( in another room with the door shut ) so she could watch TV and play video games with out dealing with him (Bitch never held a job for more than a week in her life. And she'd go to crazy lengths not to work. Bashing her knees with hammers and saying she fell.). But she'd neglect her kid. For hours at a time. Her boyfriend would come home and find his unbathed child sitting in a dirty diaper in an overheated, closed off room. He'd bitch about it to me and my exboyfriend ( his best friend ) but he'd just start drinking to forget about how bad things are.

My friend and I called child services on them. But at this point the bitch had run off with another guy because her current boyfriend kept asking her to please get a job. They lived in a shitty apartment with filth everywhere. Smelled like some one DIED in that place... For some reason Child Services didn't do anything when they got there. They just gave him a WARNING.

Now the bitch is trying to get custody of their son. Either way the kid is fucked.
And now she wants to have her new boyfriend pay for her to get her tubaligation reversed.

She told me all those rumors that alcohol hurts babies is all bullshit. She said, " I was drunk for all four pregnancies and they were fine."

There needs to be a license to have kids.. I know it'd never work, because people can make their own babies. Oh well.
