BEVERYLY HILLS, Calif. – One of the biggest surprises to come out of Strikeforce’s jaunt at the Playboy Mansion this weekend was the news that Renato “Babalu” Sobral would be joining its ranks.

Less than a month into his purgatory after being released from the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Sobral signed a three-fight deal to bolster the San Jose-based organization’s thin light heavyweight division.

Later this year, Sobral will do his best to move past a painful lesson in public relations following his win over David Heath at UFC 74. Sobral’s purse deduction of $25,000 was finalized Sept. 24 after a short hearing with the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

The penalty came about due to controversy concerning Sobral’s alleged refusal to release the fight-winning anaconda choke and his post-fight comments.

“Of course, I don’t feel very happy to get a fine for 25 g’s,” Sobral told MMAWeekly. “I don’t see many guys get fined for 50 percent of their purse, but it is what it is.”

Strikeforce promoter Scott Coker saw Babalu’s free agent status as an opportunity.

“I’ve followed his career. He’s definitely a talented 205-pounder and we’re going to build that division up,” Coker said ringside at the Playboy Mansion. “We thought he’d be a great asset.”

Is he concerned that he might have a loose cannon on his hands?

“Here’s the thing,” Coker responded. “You get in the cage, it’s an emotional thing. Tempers flare. It’s a fight. So, I’m not concerned that it will happen again. I’m sure he’s learned his lesson the hard way. But everybody deserves a second chance.”

Coker said Babalu would likely make his debut later this year. Two possible opponents included former UFC heavyweight champ Kevin Randleman, or more likely, current Strikeforce light heavyweight champ Bobby Southworth.

Babalu wasn’t particularly excited about a rematch with Kevin Randleman. But a shot at Southworth’s belt seemed hard to resist.

“He’s the champion, so I respect him a lot,” Sobral said. “He did very well [in his last fight].”

Southworth was taken aback by the news.

“That’s news to me,” Southworth told MMAWeekly. “I was under the impression I’d be fighting Nov. 16. For a guy like Babalu, I’d definitely like a little more time to prepare. I have no problem fighting him.

“He’s a great fighter … a little more experienced than me, but not more skilled. He’s going to try to submit me, so I’d try to sprawl and brawl, keep it on the feet. I think I’m a more technical striker, try to pick him apart. Babalu is hard to stop. I’d probably try to outpoint him.”

Southworth’s words didn’t surprise Sobral.

“Of course, everybody thinks I’m not very good in standup,” Sobral said. “He has his game and I have my game. He’s going to push his game and I’m going to push my game, and we’ll see what’s going to happen. He has to know that trouble’s coming.”

Either way, Sobral’s move to Strikeforce is truly a second chance to redeem himself to the fans he lost in August. He doesn’t plan on squandering it.

“I’m very happy that Strikeforce gave me the deal,” Sobral said. “I have no hard feelings with the UFC. I [have to] pay my bills. Everybody can make a mistake in his life. But I’m not going to change the way I fight. I’m born to do this. I’m ready to die and prepared to kill. That’s who I am.”

IMO : This is great for him, He is a great addon to strikeforce. I hope he dominates his division.

Renato “Babalu” Sobral has been released from his UFC contract after his behavior in the recent fight with David Heath as confirmed by UFC president Dana White during a media conference call earlier today.

Much speculation has gone into the possible punishment for Sobral after his actions in which he held onto a fight ending choke even after referee Steve Mazzagatti tried to get the fighter to release the hold.

Babalu may have sunk himself in an even deeper hole by making his post fight comments in which he stated he wanted to “teach him a lesson,” referring to Heath and their heated verbal exchange at the weigh-ins the day prior.

MMAWeekly spoke to Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer on Monday and he confirmed that at that time they had held up Babalu’s fight purse of $25,000 pending the investigation into the incident.

“Babalu” Signs on With New Management
Renato “Babalu” Sobral, who recently signed with Strikeforce after the UFC terminated his contract, has become the latest client of Ken Pavia’s MMAAgents.com sports agency.

MMAAgents.com is one of the largest sports agencies catering to MMA clients. Additionally, Pavia has earned a sort of reputation as a career-saver, helping fighters such as ousted “The Ultimate Fighter 5” cast member Gabe Ruediger get their careers back on track.

Pavia told MMAjunkie.com of the signing late Sunday night.

Details of the contract aren’t yet available.

At UFC 74 event, Sobral refused to break a fight-ending chokehold on opponent David Heath. A week later, the Nevada State Athletic Commission voted unanimously to withhold $25,000, the equivalent of Sobral’s UFC 74 “win bonus” (he earned an additional $25,000 to “show”). The NSAC voted to uphold the fine (but issued no suspension) last week.

After dominating much of their un-televised fight, Sobral secured Heath in a second-round anaconda choke. However, after Heath tapped, Sobral refused to break the hold, even as referee Steve Mazzagatti tugged on his arm. Three to four seconds passed before Sobral finally broke his grip. Sobral told the sold-out crowd at the Mandalay Bay Events Center that he wanted to “teach (Heath) a lesson” for disrespecting him during the previous day’s weigh-ins.

The UFC terminated his contract soon after, at which point Sobral hired Pavia.

“A mutual friend put us together,” Pavia said. “(The agency) isn’t a home for wayward souls. We can be picky about bringing in clients. We have to believe in a fighter and his ability to do his job. I believe in all my fighters. I’m not just saying that or putting those words out there without meaning it… I believe in Renato that way.“

A deal with the California-based Strikeforce organization soon followed. Sobral made the announcement on Saturday’s broadcast of the Strikeforce show at the Playboy Mansion.

Sobral (28-7 MMA, 6-4 UFC) is an eight-year MMA veteran. The famed Brazilian grappler fought then-champ Chuck Liddell for the UFC’s light heavyweight title in August 2006 but suffered a first-round TKO.

In addition to Sobral, Pavia announced the signings of former PRIDE fighters Cyrille Diabate and James Thompson, UFC fighter Carmelo Marerro, recent WEC signee Todd Moore, and longtime vet Carlo Prater.

WHAT A DUMBASS!
He got kicked out of the UFC because his opponent wore a t-shrit with his mug shot at the weigh-ins so Babalu decided to hold on the choke a lil longer. I guess it's not that bad in the long run since he's making more money now in SF than UFC.

you know whats kinda fucked up, When BJ Penn choked out Jens Pulver he held on for probably a little longer than Sobral did and he also made some comments before the fight and he didnt even get fined or anything.
