Giants acquire RHP Randy Messenger from Florida in exchange for Benitez

FLUSHING, N.Y. -- The San Francisco Giants have acquired right-handed pitcher Randy Messenger from the Florida Marlins in exchange for right-handed pitcher Armando Benitez, club Senior Vice President and General Manager Brian Sabean announced tonight.

Messenger, a 26-year-old pitcher, owns a 1-1 record with a 2.66 ERA (7 ER, 23.2 IP) in 23 games for the Marlins this season. He has induced four ground-ball double plays in just 23.2 innings. The newest Giant has been unscored upon in 19 of his 23 appearances this season, including 11 contests to open the campaign (11.0 innings). Messenger earned the win in Florida's 9-0 victory last night at Chicago, tossing two scoreless innings in relief of injured Sergio Mitre.

Originally drafted by Florida in the 11th round of the 1999 First-Year Player Draft, the 6-6, 240-pound hurler owns a 3-8 lifetime ledger with a 4.98 ERA (67 ER, 121.0 IP) over 111 big-league relief appearances spanning three seasons. The Sparks, Nev., native made a career-high 59 relief appearances for the Marlins in 2006, going 2-7 with a 5.67 ERA (38 ER, 60.1 IP).

Benitez returns to Florida after a two-and-a-half-year stint with the Giants in which he posted a 6-8 record with 59 saves and a 4.10 ERA (39 ER, 85.2 IP) over 90 appearances.

haha. forreal man. we had some great players like shea hillenbrand and aj pierzynski for some young pitchers who have no great future like that joe nathan and that jeremy accardo guy.

oh well at least benitez is out of sf. hennesy got a few saves this season. russ ortiz should pull a john smoltz and be a closer

That sucks!

There's nothing better than listening to Sports Phone 680 after Benitez blows a save.

That's not a bad deal for the Marlins. Messenger has a better ERA on the season but a lot of Benitez's other numbers are better... They're basically trading garbage for garbage.
