I've been a dishwasher... if it's not real busy and you have enough staff it's pretty chill, but I remember times when it was busy and I had to bus tables and wash dishes myself... that shit sucked...

and like gas one said, the pots are the worst... they get fucking coated with burnt as shit at the bottom, and you gotta scrub the shit out of them

the aboslute worst is closing time...if you can tell them you can't close and they'll still hire you, do that... when it's midnight and all the cooks start throwing HELLA shit at you... and you see pots and pans and dishes and shit full of grease everywhere piled up.. not only do you have to wash all that shit, but you gotta clean the whole dish area when you're done.... fuck that shit

if it's not too busy and you got something to entertain you like slappin some music, or choppin it up with coworkers.. its not too bad... I wouldn't recommend, but if you can't find anything else... do it
real talk, everything you said here is legit haha

They do as much as they can within their schedule man, (at least where I work). I've actually been forced by the managers to punch out and keep working till everything is clean

But when we had big parties and i seen the dishwasher struggling...I used to take off my white shirt and tie and help him...Cuz i know how it used to be....a little help in a situation like that goes a long way..
Mad respect for that, did management ever get mad at you for deserting your position to help out?

Hell yeah right on bro...

no they wouldnt get mad...Sometimes it would get so backed up, there would be no where to put the dishes..and the area we would put the dishes on for the dishwasher to wash was like 6 ft long and 3 ft wide...When we served for banquets especially weddings, we had like 4-6 servers so if i went back it wasnt a big deal...It made it easier for the servers to just go run back, bus tables, refill waters, coffee and all that other shit ( to try and get better tips) lol..

My boss who promoted me from washing dishes to setting banquets and serving them liked me...She was cool as fuck...would let me bum cigs off her all the time, let me set my own schedule (for setting the banquets) was just one of those nice bosses..

my last bosses was one of the illest bosses ever...on my last day (the company got bought out and they downsized) i was informed that every day, for the better half of three years, i had been coming back to lunch late, by 30 minutes. (i thought my lunch was an hour.) when i asked how come they never told me, he shrugged and was like "it wasnt that important"

you gotta show your bosses some love and theyll show it back

i didnt like anything about dishwashing at 16 years old except the check.....being 16 and having 700 somethin bucks every 2 weeks was cool.

lmao im not tryna sue anybody
you don't need to sue anybody but I would never work for free for anyone who was supposed to give me a paycheck. That is super illegeal for an employer to force you to keep working after you clock out with negative consequences if you don't comply. At least let them know that that is an unfair labor practice and illegal. If it continues you will contact the department of labor. Any negative BS they try to throw at you from stating your rights is also illegal and grounds for damages or fines. Don't ever work for free thats slavery.

why exactly would you rather diswash having any sort of masters degree tho, i mean take a desk job?

well u know what, explain that to the interviewer...dont answer me...im not gonna turn you down or give you the job

i somewhat admire the fact youll do that, i turned my nose up at a cashier job, i respect that...most of us just take UI and hustle lol
i dont think my education really comes into play if im just trying to get a 2 month summer job. theres plenty of jobs with real salaries out there that im qualified for but that require a real commitment. im just trying to enjoy my summer in dago but not let my bank account drain too much while doing so.

of all low skilled jobs that would be willing to take someone for just the summer, dishwashing sounds like my preferred option. over a desk job or cashiers job, etc.. i dont think i can hang out with a bunch of loud mexicans always talking shit in a desk job

i just need to actually talk to a manager so they can see im down to work hard and enjoy being around paisas, cause i have a feeling my application looks ridiculous

I'd sue over one minute of money lost out if they told me to clock out and keep working. Actually, I probably wouldn't because the second I clocked out I would leave. If they tried to fire me because I didn't keep working after clocking out like I was told to, then I'd sue.

Timm you are a naive kid that seems to like politcs which is good even if I don't agree with your views often but everything isn't capitalist this, socialist that, etc, etc. This is about some jackass making your work X amount of time without paying you and from how you worded it sounds like they would probably fire you if you didn't. That's not right. You should at very least do what Jack Tracks said but you will probably do what most Americans do when their rights are infringed upon, nothing.

That's fine, that's also your choice if you want to do anything about it or not. I just know I wouldn't stand for that type of workplace behavior, that's me though. Hopefully a different employee that's asked to do the same will standup and say that it's not right to ask them to work without payment, even if it's 10 minutes a shift. Anyways, just out of curiosity, how often are they making you clock out and work more and on average how much longer are you working off the clock? Also is this more of a mom and pop type place or a chain? Even if just a state/local chain.
