ANTIOCH (CBS 5 / BCN) ― A wanted murder suspect is on the run after he was accidentally released from a Contra Costa Juvenile Hall.
Juan Manuel Martinez was released two months ago, but authorities are just now admitting the mistake.
Juvenile hall representatives would not release many details of what they are calling an 'inadvertent release,' but CBS 5 did get confirmation from the deputy head of probation Tuesday that the suspect was released after a court order keeping the teen in custody expired.
The 17-year-old Martinez is suspected of fatally shooting 20-year-old Jose Rivas on Dec. 12.
On the day of the shooting, officers were dispatched around 10:45 p.m. to an Antioch ARCO gas station located at 2610 Contra Loma Blvd. When they arrived, the officers found Rivas suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and first aid was administered before he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators believed the victim and the gunman knew each other but did not know the motive for the killing. Police said Monday the shooting may have been gang-related.
Martinez is 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighs 170 pounds and has brown hair and brown eyes. He is considered armed and dangerous and has been known to frequent Pittsburg, Antioch, Brentwood and San Francisco, according to police.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Martinez can call Antioch police at (925) 778-2441.
