SONOMA, Calif. -- Two people were taken into custody early Wednesday in San Mateo County after a car stolen from the home of a Sonoma family who died tragically in a weekend accident was stopped by police, authorities said.
San Mateo County Sheriff's Lieutenant Wes Matsura confirmed that the arrest of Michael Vincent Guiterrez of Redwood City and Amber Marie True, 29, last Tuesday night.
“Last night, we got a call from the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department that the stolen vehicle was on Skyline Blvd.,” Matsura said. “San Mateo police along with the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department officers went up to Skyline and at about 9:40 p.m. saw the silver Nissan leave a residence.”
“The vehicle was stopped and the person was taken into custody,” he added.
In a press release, the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department said True was stopped while driving a car earlier in the day and a credit card belonging to Susan Maloney was found in her possession along with other items from the ransacked home.
Guiterrez was then taken into custody after he was stopped driving the dead family's stolen car. The suspects have been turned over to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department. They were booked and were being held on $500,000 bail.
Detectives searched the couple’s home and discovered a large amount of property – financial records, jewelry, electronics and other personal items -- believed to have been taken from the burglarized Sonoma home of the Maloney family.
The discovery of the theft sent a shock wave through the community already mourning the Maloney family’s loss in the Saturday night crash on state Highway 37.
Sonoma Police Chief Bret Sackett said officers were called to the family's home in the 1000 block of Fryer Creek Drive in Sonoma at 7 a.m. Tuesday.
The burglar or burglars forced open a side door of the garage, Sackett said. The house was ransacked and the burglar left in the family's other car. Authorities issued a statewide all-points bulletin for the car that had the license number -- 5XOH067.
Sackett said it was believed that the burglary happened between midnight and 7 a.m. Tuesday because the crash victims' relatives and friends were at the house last night.
John Maloney, 45, his wife Susan, 42, and their children Aiden, 8, and Grace, 5, were killed when a 2009 Mini Cooper driven by Steven Culbertson, of Lakeport, crashed into their 2004 Nissan Quest at Lakeville Highway and Highway 37 in Sonoma County around 9:20 p.m. Saturday.
Culbertson, 19, died Sunday at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. CHP Officer Trent Cross said he was driving at about 100 mph just before the crash.
California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer Jon Sloat said Tuesday that Culbertson had been involved in a DUI accident in June 2007 and had his license suspended for one year.
"Other than that, his record was clean," Sloat said.
The CHP spoke briefly with Culbertson's father Sunday but he was not ready to talk, Sloat said. Investigators hope to contact the family again Thursday to learn where Culbertson was coming from and heading to before the fatal crash.
Aiden and Grace Maloney were students at the K-5 Prestwood School in Sonoma. Acting Principal Linda Tiefenthal said students in the children's classes have been writing letters and creating art in their memory.
"We are devastated. They were a cherished family in our community. It's been hard on the students, teachers and staff," Tiefenthal said.
Grief counselors were at the school Monday and Tuesday, and the Wilmar Center for Bereaved Children brought therapy dogs Monday, Tiefenthal said.
"When children are exposed to a tragedy like this, they don't process it the same as adults. Being at school with its structure gives them a safe anchor," Tiefenthal said.
The school may also have a mural created in the family's memory sometime in the spring, Tiefenthal said.
