Maybe we need to stop making songs that sound like The South just to get radio play and make some quality shit...And hell, even if we did radio is corporate...They'll play what they want to.

In my opinion, cats need to stop TRYING to get on the radio and just make good, quality music...and making a "radio" song with a corny r&b hook ain't gonna get u on the radio. It just makes you corny.

Stop lookin' to radio as the way to make it and start lookin' at cats like Tech N9ne who make money by making great music, staying connected with his fans and doin' shows.

Just my 2 cents

And for the record, radio is ALOT different than it was 10 years ago so people who argue "well they USED to play shit" is moot....Different ball game with different players...Adapt, instead of making "radio friendly" shit...People wonder why we're fallin off and it's because too many artists are trying to make music that SOUNDS like what they hear on the radio thinking it's a quick way to a meal ticket. That's the opposite direction you wanna go.

You don't know how many songs I've gotten over the years where it was painfully obvious the artist was trying to make something for the radio....Unless you have the push of a label or ALOT of buzz, you're making a wack ass song for nuthin'...Stay true to the shit that YOU want to make not what you think people wanna hear. Lately it's been everyone making down south soundin songs and that gets boring especially if u can tell the artist's heart ain't in it...Similar to the hyphy phase, everyone (including artists you wouldn't IMAGINE doin a hyphy song) were makin em just because it was a fad....STOP FOLLOWING AND START LEADING!

And what's funny to me about that video is Snoop...That dude follows every trend imaginable and in my opinion is a character now more than a rapper...Sure he makes boat loads of money but HE'S SNOOP and you're not...That's the big difference...Don't think you can take his formula and make it work for yerself lol.

1000% Amen.

And like what Mars said...the artist should BUILD his own fan base...I still crack up when I see MC Nobody on stage getting mad that the crowd doesn't care about his music and garbage stage show. Just cuz your boys like your music, doesn't mean ANYONE outside your garage will.

everything above is true... but you also have to follow the mood of the times, different era's different sounds....In 80's Hip Hop, B-boy sound, 90's Gangsta, hardcore, mobb, pimpin, late 90's Bling Bling rap, and ect...ect...
I just had say that cuzz I met this old school producer that was trying to sell me some beats that sounded like it was from the mid 90's....LOL

producers still sample songs from the 60s and 70s.why would having a 90s sounding song be so bad or funny or what ever?i thought the late 80s/early 90s was the golden era of hiphop.i wouldnt mind hearing some fresh 90s west coast production with a 2010 lyrical twist!

I'm not sayin that you don't update your sound...But that can be accomplished while still maintaining your back-bone and original creativity. I mean, look at a cat like DJ Quik....He still makes funky shit and has stayed "with the times"....

^^^ LOL I hear ya, and I know that's what ya think about me but I'm just saying there's nothing wrong with making your OWN trend instead of following "what's hot"....That's what makes things generic. And that ain't aimed at you at all cause I dig what u do Indo.

I believe we should put our efforts and focus on what we can control. We can control the quality of our music, how good our shows are, and how hard we work. WE CANT CONTROL RADIO. So let's not focus on that. Put some effort into it cause you never know, but (focus) on what "YOU" can control.

and this is why you "new" cats need to learn who dj mark7 is and why he's respected...couldn't have said it better myself.

I'll say it again...I love the underground and my current position....really don't need any help. If you work it right, you can make a good lil amount of bread off this shit, radio not included.

Seems like a lot of ppl on Siccnes are taking the angle of rappers doing whatever they have to do for themselves, and not relying on the radio. I agree somewhat, but we gotta be honest, it is almost impossible to survive in today's music game without radio support. I think radio DJs have to show some loyalty to the region they're serving. Rappers shouldn't have to kiss ass to get play, and they definitely shouldn't have to sell out. There is no reason why KMEL is playing Gucci Mane every five minuets, but I only hear J. Stalin at 2AM in the morning. Shit is just twisted.

IMO this makes the west look like a bunch of cry baby's..mad cuz they cant get radio play. How can one radio station be the downfall of a whole coast? Please! I personally know three of the rappers they interviewed and they should all focus on making better music before they boycott anything. Matter of fact I tried to set up an interview/production for one of em months ago and he still hasn't come thru..and that's sad considering I'm a producer and Brand Ambassador for Blacktree TV the #22 most viewed channel in youtube history with over 250 million views...a huge opportunity missed. Cats just aint on they grind like they need to be and wanna blame other factors when in reality its them. Step your everything up and focus more on your artistry. Create ya own way and make ya own lane. If nobody is feelin yo shit besides you, yo team and a few others it might be time to reassess your talent. Just because you rap doesn't mean your good at it.
