Update: Apparently ESPN’s Ed Werder is full of shit. As most ESPN talking heads are. Word is now that ESPN mentioned “tendons” in the report, when infact it is “ligaments.” So at this time we are still where we were the other day and the 49ers are still standing by Smith not needing surgery. Per Matthew Barrows, 49ers head trainer, Jeff Ferguson, is friendly with Andrews and has sent Andrews a copy of Smith’s MRI results, which is standard procedure. So basically ESPN got us all worked up for nothing.

49ers quarterback Alex Smith is seeking a second opinion on his injured throwing shoulder, which might lead to season-ending surgery, according to an ESPN.com report.
Smith will consult with Dr. James Andrews after preliminary MRI exam results indicated he appears to have suffered a serious injury to tendons in his right shoulder during the 49ers’ 23-3 loss to Seattle on Sunday, a source told ESPN.com.
If the diagnosis performed at Stanford is confirmed by Andrews, the source said, Smith is expected to have corrective surgery immediately even though he would probably miss the rest of the season.
