Report: Alex Smith to seek 2nd opinion
By The Mercury News
Article Launched: 10/02/2007 10:37:24 PM PDT

49ers quarterback Alex Smith is seeking a second opinion on his injured throwing shoulder, which might lead to season-ending surgery, according to an ESPN.com report.
Smith will consult with Dr. James Andrews after preliminary MRI exam results indicated he appears to have suffered a serious injury to tendons in his right shoulder during a 23-3 loss to Seattle on Sunday, a source told ESPN.com. If the diagnosis performed at Stanford is confirmed by Andrews, the source said, Smith is expected to have corrective surgery immediately even though he would probably miss the rest of the season.

The 49ers have reported Smith's injury as a third-degree shoulder separation that would not require surgery. Smith said Monday that two ligaments connecting the collarbone to the shoulder blade were torn when he was sacked by defensive tackle Rocky Bernard.

damn thats gonna suck for the niners if he is out for the rest of the season

I'll be dead honest with you, and I've BEEN saying this, the worst move the Niners ever made was dropping Jeff Garcia. Regardless of how much like a fag he talked and how unorthodox he played he got the job done, could take a hit AND scrambled like a muthafucka. Especially since the organization decided to get rid of Garcia AND Owens in the same year. Stupid move.

Most Niner fans laughed at me when he played for Detroit, but now that he has played in Philly and Tampa where he has a few players he looks just like he did 4-5 years ago.

I was born in SF, raised in SF and the Peninsula and live here now. I have been a Niner fan my whole life and watched every game for the past fifteen - twenty years. That guy would get the crap kicked out of him just like Steve Young and get up and do his job.

You tell me when the last time was the Niners had a decent offense, the last time the Niners made the playoffs and the last time the Niners had a Pro-Bowl QB and that all happened when Jeff Garcia was on the team. He has shown his ability to run and offense and control a game with mediocre teams since.

It always makes me laugh when Niner fans are critical of Jeff Garcia because he kept the Niners afloat for a good 3-4 years when they should have sank. Especially about his toughness since he stayed in there and took hits just Young.

But then again you also said Alex Smith "continues to improve" in that bust thread about a week ago, I know we are only 4 weeks in but he certainly hasn’t looked good once all season or pre-season except for one quarter against the Steelrs so maybe you need to watch your television a little more closely.
