First things First this post isn't directed at or towards anyone....Just Some Facts.....KMEL is the 4th largest radio station in the nation as far as urban music goes.... Even though ON THE BLOCK comes on sunday nights from 11:00 to 1:00 it's still being listened to by a good 100,000 listeners....It may seem like that time slot ain't important BUT IT IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!! I just came back from the south and they don't even have have a show like this in some states...I told em about ON THE BLOCK and trust me they would be more than greatful to have the opportunity that we have to get their music played....No matter how hard you are you ain't gonna go nowhere in this game without being a business man...I have realized this firsthand...So stay business minded and persistent and you will get way farther in this game....My Grandmother always told me a saying that I now live by cause it is so real " You can catch more Bee's with honey than you can with vinegar" If you can't interpret that statement then this is the wrong business for you...I wish everyone the best of luck and success....VON and SCOTTIE I thank you for what you have done and continue to do...

Not that my opinion matters but other markets dont need a show like this becuz there radio stations support them....

1- NY
2- LA
3- CHICAGO
4- SF

Its a wonderfull thing what KMEL's STAFF is doing. too push the bay shit out. believe you me i am very happy. it makes me tick. more than you know.

However. if you wanna look at it from a standpoint of what other markets do and what this market does. THIS MARKET AINT DOIN SHIT!... im not talking about sacramento or theese little markets. Top 10. You will hear local music around the clock. Guaranteed.... Imagine hearing what u hear on sunday nights hourly, around the clock.... the nasty nates, the c4's, the daddy riches... sounds nice huh? well it is like that other places.... not tryin too stir nothin up. Just givin my viewpoint on this whole BULLSHIT situation.

You can look @ there playlists if u go too http://www.radioandrecords.com .... and 85% of the markets out there cater too there area. No joke!.

Well just thought i'd bring that up... Keep it movin

yes and no, if you look at those markets, ok yes they may be playing artists from their area, BUT, they are playing "MAJOR LABEL" artists from their area, what we are talking about here is a show solely dedicated to LOCAL artists from this area, artists who may have no budget, no major, hell no label period, but have a hot record or whatever, they are giving nobodies a chance, not to say thep eople that get played are nobodies, but they are giving more than just E-40 or Too $hort a chance here and we need to appreciate that.

and I totally agree with what Bill $tack said, I appreciate KMEL and 95 to the fullest, but I will take it to KPOO, KPFA, and others also, whatever avenues that I have found that are willing to be supportive, I appreciate them and thank them for that opportunity to be heard

Unfortunetly we are the only market THAT DOES NOT suport their artist as far as sales are concerned. Soundscan numbers don't lie! We invented the term playa hata for a reason...So KMEL can play all the bay area music it wants....it doesn't add to record sales cuz that's the truth!

as far as 100,000 listeners ....man...most people I know with a job or going to school ain't up that late......

dj 2nv sounds like he knows whats up.

i can respect the idea of why the show is where or when it is rather, but all in all dj2nv just hit the nail on the head.

the movement is bigger than scottie and von and they are doing all they can. i believe that whole heartedly but, when our biggest local artists are moving only 15,000 units which includes nation wide orders we aint shit on the map. we will continue to be over looked and passed by with the execption of the few, and i mean hand full that have big dist. deals. facts are facts. im over it already and so should all of you.

yup, the type of people who make up the Siccness populace are not represenative of the Bay as a whole. The majority of Bay Area market does not support local artists, and I don't see that changing anytime soon unless someone starts a damn revolution. Your average Bay Area kid would rather buy a G-Unit album over a local artist. What is the root of the problem, and what is the answer? Well...that shit is a whole other topic in itself, ha!

some good points by dutch and a good thread. i agree with alot of this shit. von and scotty are doing a good job. we need more songs like "hot in here", "hyphy", "what iz it" (songs that used to get played throughout the day, not just 1 or 2 spins after 9pm).

I don't think people should count the bay out and this isn't wishful thinking. most of u have no idea how big E-40 signing to BME was. E-40 could really bust down some doors for the bay area if everything goes the way it should with this next album. He's got rick rock and Lil Jon producing his new album. that's the best of both worlds. for now all u can do is spread the word to support local talent cuz they need it the most.

Our problem is we spend too much time going back and forth about why we're not doing this and why we ain't blowing up instread of buying the damn music or calling tthe station and requesting local music besides our own. I said it before we're doing this whole thing as a shotgun approach and independent labels have all but ruined the Bay area because it seems we have more rappers than fans in my opinion. Too many muthafuckas making music that's really not hot and then telling us all to call KMEL and request it. We need to get behind our artist that have the most potential too blow like Quinn, Keak, the Team, 40 and EA Ski and put our Cool Edit programs and pc microphones and contact folks in other regions andspread the word about our artists.

LA plays LA artists because LA is amajor market and it has major market acts that support each other like DJ Quik, Snoop and others.

NY plays NY artists because NY is a major market and it has major market acts tha support each other like Jadakiss, 50 Cent and others.

Down South plays down south artists because they all support each other like Ludacris, Scarface and others.

Our people like Quik, Dre and Game have to go out of Cali to get the respect and recognition they deserve. Why did Yukmouth leave the Bay, why did Too Short leave the Bay ? Because shit i too congested up in here and frankly the shit is reaching sickening levels.

I cant front in the last 1-2 years local commercial radios like Kmel & Wild have stepped up a lot to promote local acts whether it was a direct result of their competition or not. They haven't stopped so far so i give the stations props. We can hope doors stay open. Radioplay is still hard to get. Dont forget this is a business.

My brotha its more complex than that. Calling and requesting means nothing. In this business everyone must get paid. The greedy Programmers and consultants must get P.A.I.D.
The days are long gone when a DJ made an impulse decision about what song to spin. The music industry is a $12 billion-a-year business; today, nearly every commercial music station in the country has an indie guarding its playlist. And for that right, the indie shells out hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to individual stations -- and collects a lot more from the major record labels.

fuck new bay, fuck old bay... just do your thing, and if the people feel it, they'll buy...

there's a lot of sales for grab in the bay. Big market, its your job as the artist to go out there and get them, they won't just buy a nameless cd sitting on the rasputin shelf... wanna bubble take the loss, press up a bunch of promo's if radio won't play you, make sure the people do.

I didnt wanna get into this subject , but I will. I laugh my ass off when I hear people say that we need more songs like "hot in here", and "hyphy". Hot in here all in all is not a bad song, though nothing great whatsoever. Hyphy? Are you kidding me? This is one reason why the bay doesn't get any respect, is when we put this type of product out there like it's our best we have. This song is nothing more than goofy. Is this how we want the Bay Area to be represented? I know this isn't the representation that I want want from where I come from. I think I can speak for most of the thugs/gangtas/hustlas that I know from the yay, the we don't want to be represented as a buncha idiots ridin 500$ cars with 1000$ fake spinners on em, jumpin on there hoods like a bunchas idiots. The federations whole cd was garbage, and this is supposed to bring the bay back, and this is the Bay song that all the dj's play all the time? That is really a joke. There are a short list of mc's puttin it down in the right way for the Bay, and the West, and unfortunately they are not gettin their proper shine on.
