Not gratuitously violent, but when stuff does happen, it's like a kick in the nuts. The violence is still pretty intense.. maybe the most intense I've seen since the opening scene of Irreversible. Both of us shot forward in our seats several times. The special effects are pretty fucking amazing too. You get to see a lot of post-fight close-ups of busted faces, and these people get fucked up. Ed Harris was definitely one of the best parts of the movie. And Viggo Mortensen gets to kick some serious ass.
That said, this is probably the least "Cronenberg" of the Cronenberg films, in terms of the really weird shit. Nobody has any vaginas, other than the ones they were born with, and there are no shifting, breathing piles of flesh. To me, this movie asks questions about what defines the character of a man. Why are certain acts heroic in one situation and criminal in another?
Great stuff.
