Influenza A(H1N1) - update 8

1 May 2009 -- The situation continues to evolve. As of 19:00 GMT, 1 May 2009, 13 countries have officially reported 365 cases of influenza A(H1N1) infection.

The United States Government has reported 141 laboratory confirmed human cases, including one death. Mexico has reported 156 confirmed human cases of infection, including nine deaths.

The following countries have reported laboratory confirmed cases with no deaths - Austria (1), Canada (34), China, Hong Kong, Special Administrative Region (1), Denmark (1), Germany (3), Israel (2), Netherlands (1), New Zealand (3), Spain (13), Switzerland (1) and the United Kingdom (8).

Further information on the situation will be available on the WHO website on a regular basis.

WHO advises no restriction of regular travel or closure of borders. It is considered prudent for people who are ill to delay international travel and for people developing symptoms following international travel to seek medical attention, in line with guidance from national authorities.

There is also no risk of infection from this virus from consumption of well-cooked pork and pork products. Individuals are advised to wash hands thoroughly with soap and water on a regular basis and should seek medical attention if they develop any symptoms of influenza-like illness.

LOL

Uhh being paranoid causes people to stop spending

Haven't you noticed every article about the financial impact of swine flu was concerning how much it would negatively impact the markets?
I can't believe any of those articles because they are all misleading saying this flu is the worst thing since the damn plague and the world is ending.

Get outta here with that shit. I've never heard of the flu that causes ppl to stop spending.

This shit isn't even a pandemic they are over exaggerating the shit like I stated just so ppl go out and buy their face shields, hand sanitizer, lysol spray, and all that other shit that isn't necessary to make it through a regular day.

Wow a few hundred ppl have the flu, I've heard this story multiples times in the past couple years with different names. Like I said every year they think up something new to try and scare ppl to get all the protection they can before the "whatever flu" hits your area.

:dead:

OK try this then;

Google "swine flu economic impact" or "bird flu economic impact" or "SARS economic impact"

and then see if the economic impact they are talking about is positive or negative.

Even a huge increase in buying masks, hand sanitizer, going to the doctor, etc is not going to even come close to negating the impact of people staying home, reduced spending on normal items, not going to work, and canceling travel plans.

I mean look what 9/11 did to economic activity and that was an isolated event.

Immediately after the attacks, leading forecast services sharply revised downward their projections of economic activity. The consensus forecast for U.S. real GDP growth was instantly downgraded by 0.5 percentage points for 2001 and 1.2 percentage points for 2002. The implied projected cumulative loss in national income through the end of 2003 amounted to 5 percentage points of annual GDP, or half a trillion dollars.

9/11 destroyed multiple buildings and killed thousands, swine flu hasn't done shit compared to 9/11. this is just the flu. Ppl are throwing up and shitting big deal. The old ppl and the lil kids are always dieing when the flu hits, so I don't see why ppl feel this one is any different.

Wow it can mutate, big deal viruses are always mutating that's why a person gets the common cold multiple times throughout their life because it is always changing.

If the swine flu has you afraid to leave your house you are a fucking moron. (This statement is directed at the entire world so don't get offended Mr. Nice Guy)

^^^^but the bottom line is both incidents induced fear in the general public, and u cant deny that, people are freaking out, regardless of how valid the reason is. When people are afraid, they stop doing their daily activities, i.e. buying gas, coffee, groceries, traveling, etc.

^^^no ones gonna run around like a chicken with their head cut off, not knowing what to do. Its as simple as whats been done by people in this thread, pulling theirs kids out of school is one example. And that right there takes money out of the economy. (schools get paid for attendance).
