If you have a Wellsfargo account and do the transfer online, use the name Kahlil Sullivan since he opened the account for his brother, and on the transfer description write "donation for memorial fund"

SAN FRANCISCO -- Police investigated a fatal, officer-involved shooting Tuesday evening on San Francisco's west side.

San Francisco police Officer Maria Oropeza confirmed that one person was killed in the shooting near Lake Merced.

Oropeza said the victim was not a police officer.

Police were alerted of the shooting at about 9 p.m. on Garces Drive.

Officers On Leave After SF Apartment Shooting

The San Francisco Police Department has released the names of the two officers involved in the Tuesday night shooting at the Villas Parkmerced apartment complex that left one person dead.

Officer Michelle Alvis, 28, who has been with the department for three years, and Officer John Keesor, 35, who has been with the department for four years, have been placed on paid administrative leave while the incident is investigated, according to San Francisco police Sgt. Neville Gittens.

San Francisco resident Asa Sullivan, 25, was shot and killed by police after he fled to the attic of the apartment where he was staying with a friend.

Police had been called to the Villas Parkmerced apartments, near San Francisco State University, around 8:50 p.m. Tuesday on reports from neighbors of squatters in an uninhabited apartment. Gittens said the apartment complex has had problems in the past with trespassers, and management had asked residents to report any suspicious activity.

Officers contacted security and then entered the two-floor apartment at 2 Garces Drive. Gittens did not know if the officers entered by force, by key or if the door was open.

Once inside, the officers encountered Sullivan and another man. Sullivan fled upstairs to the attic. Officers attempted to get him to come out, but he refused, saying he didn't want to go back to jail, Gittens said.

Alvis and Keesor followed Sullivan into the attic. The attic was dark and the officers used a flashlight to see. The officers said that once they were inside the attic, Sullivan took a shooting stance, extending his arms in front of him and clasping his hands around a "cylindrical" object.

Gittens did not say what Sullivan was holding in his hands, but investigators did not find a gun anywhere in the attic.

Police say Keesor shot first and the bullet ricocheted around the attic and nicked Alvis' ear. Then, Alvis fired. Gittens said he does not know how many rounds were fired, but Sullivan was hit and died in the attic.

The San Francisco medical examiner's office reported today that Sullivan's death remains under investigation.

The ricocheting bullets also pierced the attic floor, causing the other officers inside the apartment to take cover. The officers never fired back, Gittens said.

Internal affairs, the homicide detail and the district attorney's office have all launched separate investigations into the incident. A representative from the Office of Citizen Complaints was also present during the preliminary investigation.

"I want to emphasize that this incident shows the extreme difficulties and stressful circumstances that officers find themselves in," police Chief Heather Fong said Wednesday.

Police arrested the other man in the apartment. Gittens said he did not know what charges he faces.

About 30 minutes later, a fatal officer-involved shooting that left an unarmed man dead took place in a two-story apartment building near Lake Merced. Officers went to the Park Villa Apartments on 2 Garces -- which was supposed to be unoccupied -- and found two squatters inside. One man was arrested, but the other individual ran upstairs into a dark attic.

When the officers followed, authorities say the man took a shooting stance and appeared to be holding something. Wednesday, Chief Heather Fong said one of the officers felt her partner was in danger, so she opened fire.

"The partner officer who had the cylindrical object pointed at her felt something go past her ear. [She] felt that something had just gone by the side of her head. Believing it was a ricocheting bullet -- and having this individual facing her in a shooting stance with a cylindrical object pointed at her -- felt that her safety was in jeopardy, and she opened fire," Police Chief Fong explained.

The name of the man who was shot has not yet been released.

Man killed by police after wielding eyeglasses case
Associated Press
SAN FRANCISCO - A man killed by police while hiding in a friend's town house attic was holding an eyeglasses case, not a gun as originally reported, police Chief Heather Fong said.

Asa B. Sullivan, 25, was fatally shot Tuesday by two officers after he scampered into a 2-foot-high crawl space and vowed he would not be taken alive, Fong said Wednesday.

One officer mistook Sullivan's eyeglasses case for a weapon and opened fire, grazing his partner's head with a bullet and causing her to believe they were under fire. She also began firing, Fong said.

"They believed this individual was pointing a firearm at them," Fong said. "They took action they felt was appropriate at the time."

Sullivan's mother, Kathleen Espinosa of Van Nuys, said her son was not a violent person but was convicted for robbery in 1999. He was also on probation for dealing marijuana.

"He didn't want to go back to jail," Espinosa said. "I know his personality. He would be one to hide. He was scared."

Police originally misreported that Sullivan had fired at them. They also incorrectly said he was a squatter.

Police were investigating a report that squatters were living there, but Sullivan was staying with a friend living there legally.

The officers were not immediately identified and it wasn't clear if the woman officer was injured.

It did say he was wielding an eyeglasses case. He could have really bruised somebody if he threw it hard enough........

Sorry, I know this story ain't funny but I'm just pointing out how stupid the police can be; not that you all weren't aware.
