@ Phantom - You're right, education can be very beneficial. I dont mean to speak down on the education itself. I meant to devalue the standards that are so widely misunderstood. It was just a little uncomforting to see somebody of your background adapt to those corporate/ignorant idealogies. But hey, if you were REALLY looking for a graduate, you wouldnt be posting on the siccness... so lets have some more fun with it.


Dont get me wrong, Im not looking for a job here, just wanted to make some points.

I understand where your coming from now. I didn't mean higher than me in the business aspect, because clearly you are. I meant as an artist, a person, we all pretty much started with a passion for the art, you know? I feel you on diversity and expansion, I don't just do album covers and websites either, I've worked in designing layouts for programs (software.) I also program in VB. However, I've only just recently established myself, so big names aren't really an importance to me at this point, I am more focused on keeping my current clients happy and getting my work out there internationally. I wasn't trying to knock you or anything, I think what you are doing is great personally, alot of small Graphic Design/Media companies don't really get to the point where they develop a payroll and actually need to hire more help, and if they do it's nothing special. I was just going over some realistic points and expressing my opinion on the whole education versus experience issue and how they compare. Talent only gets us so far, persistence and dedication is what keeps the engine running. Education is important, but being able to solve real life problems and handle real life situations is important too, being able to apply what one has learned. I just hope you find the right people who understand that and are perfectionists, good luck.

Correct me if I am wrong. This is not an internship, this is a business, a real job, something that pays bills and puts food on the table. Im sure Phantom is looking for someone of equal or greater knowledge and experience in the business, so they can learn from one another and expand together, not from one to another like a father to a child. Someone who can jump right in with no questions asked and get the job done right.

Am I right?

This is why (if I get financial aid) I'm going to go for a degree in design because sometimes it doesn't matter how good you are, if you don't have a degree you aren't shit to some people. I'd like to have a degree so I could work for a company getting steady pay rather than have my money coming and going.

I feel what u saying. One day I was up for a graphics job, I presented my portfolio in a very professional manner...had my street work and my professional work. But I couldnt show a degree. It was some other dude up for the job as well. He told me himself that my work was better than his. But because he had the degree and I didnt, he got the job.

Layouts are usually done in either Quark, Adobe InDesign or Illustrator. Quark is a TRUE layout program & probably the most widely used when you reach the upper echelons of the template world. InDesign is also a TRUE layout program. Illustrator is a vector program intended for ILLUSTRATING (i.e. logos, vector art, etc) that also allows you the alternative to do layouts but by no means is a "layout" program. Hope that helps.

man it seems like fools where just jumpin on phant...one thing i can say is he is giving a opputunity to those that have never had it and could use it....a steping stone for them....a legacy for him...fucking brillant if you ask me......too bad nobody is in the postion on here to offer jobs (not just can you do this cover?) i dont have the education or i would aply..

Its one thing to be self-taught but its another to know how to operate in an actual business enviornment. I think Phantom just wants to ensure that people understand the seriousness behind this proposal. It is not similar to the "I'll give you two CDs & a pack of Big League Chew for the design" requests that frequent these boards.

that's the great thing about graphics, you can learn something new everyday.....i was just stating Phantom has been running his business for a while now.....and it would be nice for someone just to come in and know everything about his business, but that's not the case.......that would be ideal, but in reality when u get a job, i assume u would have to learn stuff from your boss that goes on in that company ?? so that means, u would learn alot from him, and whoever he gets he might learn stuff from them as well, it goes both ways !!!
