The dancer getting close to your woman is Bear Creek High School alumnus Tyrell Washington, 24, who now regularly backs up Beyonce. Washingon is headed to Lagos, Nigeria this weekend to dance at a Beyonce show. He’s among the local residents who have competed in the Apollo Night talent competition over the years.
Some well-known entertainers have gotten their start at Apollo Night, Stockton’s biggest annual talent show. Some of those artists will look back on their Apollo Night experiences this Sunday in a Record story about the show’s 10th anniversary. At The Record’s request, former Apollo Night competitor Elizabeth Pha sent along some snapshots of her experiences as an American Idol finalist in 2005
Stockton dancer Jacob Morgan, 8, above, has been picked to appear in the next music video by pop star Fergie. He leaves Thursday for Southern California to shoot the video for "Fergalicious," said his mother Sofie De Luna, 28.
Morgan auditioned for the video last week and was confident that he would be selected, she said.
"He came out so excited and told me, 'Mom, I got this. I have this feeling,'" De Luna said.
Morgan’s agent called the family Monday and told them he had won the role.
Stockton producers Dee and Teak Underdue join several hip-hop heavyweights on “Laugh Now, Cry Later,” the new album by rap legend Ice Cube. Snoop Dogg, Lil’ Jon, Swizz Beatz, Scott Storch and DJ Green Lantern all contributed to the CD, which includes two tracks produced by the Underdue brothers: “Child Support” and “The Game Lord.” The album was released Tuesday.
Dee and Teak Underdue work under the name Hallway Productionz. Dee Underdue, 25, said he was taken aback when he heard Hallway music on a television commercial for “Laugh Now, Cry Later.”
“He plays Lil’ Jon’s beat, Scott Storch’s beat and our beat. It’s like, damn,” Dee Underdue said.
Hallway Productionz also worked with Cube in 2005, producing his song “Anybody Seen the PoPo’s?!” on the soundtrack to “XXX: State of the Union.” Cube, born O’Shea Jackson, starred in the movie.
Dee and Teak Underdue were introduced to the former N.W.A. by Stockton native Dave “Dizmix” Lopez, who lives in L.A. and produced a song for the group Westside Connection, which includes Cube.
The rap superstar isn’t arrogant despite his legendary status, Dee Underdue said.
“It was like we knew him our whole life. He’s just normal,” he said.
“Laugh Now, Cry Later” most likely won’t be the last time the Underdue brothers are heard on a nationally-released album. Dee Underdue said they’re working on a project for rap juggernaut Def Jam records, and they’re producing songs for a forthcoming album by Westside Connection member Dub C.
PR for the Scion King of the Beats competition recently sent along these photos of Tracy producer Beathoven Sept. 17 at the Los Angeles regional. Beathoven won that competition and advanced to the national finals in November in New York City, where he’ll compete for $5,000
An article in the November issue of The Source states that Oakland rapper Keak Da Sneak (above right, with E-40) has been "plagued by a career gone haywire." Keak has released 17 albums, been a member of two groups and signed contracts with four labels, according to the magazine.
"My main thing is I need somebody to market me," he said.
To accomplish that, the rapper has hired the Stockton-based firm Loyalty Promotions and Management
Organizers for the Scion King of the Beats competition recently sent along these photos from the event’s final, which was won by Tracy producer Beathoven
