startin a fresh thread...i know we have way more Giants fans here but the A's gotta get love too. props to Andrew Bailey on the ROY award, nice to have a good closer to build a pitching staff around.

so here's some news

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, Marco Scutaro turned down a more lucrative offer from the A's when he signed with the Red Sox.
Scutaro inked a two-year deal with Boston on Friday that contains $12.5 million in guaranteed money and another $3-6 million in option money for 2012. Oakland offered him "slightly" more, according to Rosenthal's sources, but the 34-year-old shortstop liked the idea of playing in Boston and for a contender.

kinda interesting that they went after Scutaro after letting him go.

The Tigers have had talks this winter with the representatives for shortstop Bobby Crosby, according to MLB.com's Jason Beck.
Crosby, 29, hit a disappointing .223/.295/.357 this past season but he's a decent enough defender and isn't much worse offensively than the Tigers' 2009 shortstop, Adam Everett. Crosby, who hit 22 home runs in his rookie season, may do well with a change of scenery. The Pirates and Rockies have also shown some level of interest in the infielder.

supposedly there are several teams, including the Red Sox, interested in Crosby for his defensive upside. and they think he'll hit way better with a new team in a new ballpark.

Athletics acquired INF/OF Jake Fox, 2B Aaron Miles and $1 million from the Cubs for RHP Jeff Gray, RHP Ronny Morla and INF/OF Matt Spencer.
Fox, 27, hit .259/.311/.468 with 11 homers, 12 doubles and 44 RBI in 216 at-bats this past season for the Cubs. He was buried on the depth chart in Chicago and should find more playing time in Oakland. That said, he's not much of an upgrade over Jack Cust at the DH position or Eric Chavez at third base. Oakland GM Billy Beane must be banking on another Chavez injury. The $1 million provided by the Cubs will help cover the remaining salary of the offensively- and defensively-inept Miles, who was basically a throw-in.

Athletics agreed to terms with RHP Joey Devine on a one-year, $560,000 contract.
The 26-year-old underwent Tommy John surgery in April, missing the entire season. He posted a 0.59 ERA over 45 2/3 innings in 2008. Devine hopes to be ready for the start of spring training.

The A's have offered arbitration to free agent Justin Duchscherer.
Duchscherer, a Type B free agent, has already drawn interest from multiple clubs this season and is unlikely to accept the offer of arbitration from Oakland. He went 10-8 with a 2.54 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over 22 starts in 2008 but missed all of the 2009 season with injury and depression issues. The A's will gain a supplemental round draft pick if (or when) he signs on elsewhere.

very smart considering many teams want Duke right now.

According to Adam Rubin of the Daily News, the Mets are one team 'believed to have considered' acquiring Jack Cust.
Cust, 30, could earn roughly $4-5 million in arbitration this winter, so the Athletics may consider a trade instead of simply non-tendering him. He batted .240/.356/.417 with 25 homers and 70 RBI in 2009, but ranks well below-average in the outfield. Cust was primarily used as a designated hitter in 2009, but also saw time in right field. Though the cost to acquire him would be low, Rubin thinks he would fit best in Seattle or Texas.

Athletics signed INF Dallas McPherson to a minor league contract.
The deal comes with an invitation to spring training. McPherson, who at one time was a highly touted prospect, has battled injuries throughout his career and is now 29 years old. He has 150 home runs and a .586 career slugging percentage in 608 minor league games but also carries a lousy .245/.298/.458 career batting line on the major league level.

General manager Billy Beane doesn't plan to be active in the free agent market.
"We're going to look at young players to fill spots, first and foremost," Beane said, with an eye towards top prospects Brett Wallace and Chris Carter. "If those players we'd like to acquire aren't obtainable, we'll consider bringing in guys who can hold the positions down. We're going to stay disciplined and try to do everything we can to fill those spots with young players." Beane would consider re-signing Justin Duchscherer or Adam Kennedy, but will let them entertain offers on the open market first. Such a strategy would effectively squash the chances of a Miguel Tejada or Carlos Delgado landing in Oakland.

I loved when the A's repeatedly got in the playoffs earlier this decade...although they never got far it was dope to make those east coast teams come to the Coliseum.

The San Jose Mercury News believes the A's are leaning towards non-tendering Jack Cust prior to the deadline next Saturday.
It seemed like Cust's second-half rebound would save him, but the A's are uncertain he's worth the $4 million or more he'd command in arbitration. It could come down to his willingness to accept less prior to next week's deadline. If he's willing to take something like a 10 percent raise from his $2.8 million salary in 2009, then the A's would be more likely to bring him back.

Justin Duchscherer declined arbitration from the A's.
"The Duke of Hurl" is now officially on the open agent market and is free to sign with any team. He's drawn interest from multiple clubs despite missing the entire 2009 season with injuries and clinical depression. Duchscherer was 10-8 with a 2.54 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over 22 starts in 2008.

The Diamondbacks are not interested in signing free agent infielder Adam Kennedy, reports Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.
Ken Rosenthal earlier reported that the club had an interest in the free agent second baseman, but the Diamondbacks quickly refuted the report. With many holes and not enough cash to fill them all, Arizona is focusing its attention elsewhere at this point. Stay tuned.

Rich Harden signed with the Rangers...if he stays healthy that should make our matchups against them pretty interesting.

edit: Crosby close to signing a cheap 1 year deal with the Pirates.

The Diamondbacks are unlikely to sign free agent right-hander Justin Duchscherer, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
Duchscherer was interested in pitching for Arizona, but the club appears to be moving on. It could be they don't have a pressing need for a starter after acquiring Edwin Jackson and Ian Kennedy in Tuesday's three-way blockbuster. Another possibility, according to Piecoro, is that the club saw something they didn't like in his medical records.

wow, how do u guys feel about this?

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the A's may be a sleeper candidate for free agent DH Hideki Matsui.
"We're not opposed to bringing a veteran in that can help us in the short term until we create somebody from our organization to take that spot," said A's manager Bob Geren. "He's had some great years, great numbers in New York. He's helped them win a lot." Matsui may have to take close to a 50% pay cut from his $13 million 2009 salary in order for Oakland to get a deal done.

Matsui will probably re-sign with the Yankees, its looking like.

And the Pirates signed crosby to a 1 year deal.

Athletics released RHP Santiago Casilla.
A non-tender candidate, the A's decided to cut him loose to make room for Rule 5 selection Bobby Cassevah. Casilla, 29, posted a 5.96 ERA and 1.78 WHIP in 46 games in '09. He's shown flashes of being an effective reliever, but his shoddy command continues to hold him back.

Athletics selected RHP Bobby Cassevah from the Angels with the 10th pick of the Rule 5 Draft.
Cassevah, 24, was drafted out of high school by the Angels back in 2004. The young sinkerballer posted a 3.68 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in 57 relief appearances with Double-A Arkansas last season. He held right-handed hitters to a .198 batting average in '09.

Athletics non-tendered designated hitter Jack Cust.
The A's liked Cust when he was cheap, but not so much at $4 million. Given that there may not be any teams that appreciate him quite like Oakland does, it's possible he could re-sign later on. If so, it'd probably be for about the same $2.8 million he made last season. At the moment, Jake Fox tops the team's depth chart at DH.

i dont see why the A's wouldnt be able to re-sign him for the same price down the line

Athletics signed RHP Fernando Hernandez to a minor league contract.
They also inked LHPs Cedrick Bowers and Matt Wright, RHP Marcus McBeth and 1B Matt Whitney to minor league pacts. All receive invites to spring training. Hernandez, 25, was a former Rule 5 pick of the Athletics prior to the 2008 season, but was returned to the White Sox after just three appearances. He posted a 1.68 ERA and 20 saves in 57 appearances between Double-A Birmingham and Triple-A Charlotte last season.

ESPN.com's Buster Olney reports that the Blue Jays are planning on trading Michael Taylor to the A's for Brett Wallace once they acquire the outfielder.
It has been a crazy couple of days. This deal, if accurate, will serve as an offshoot of the three-team blockbuster involving Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee. Taylor, a 6'6" 23-year-old, hit .282/.359/.491 this past season at Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Wallace, who is also 23, batted .302/.365/.505 in 182 at-bats with Triple-A Sacramento after being acquired in July from the Cardinals. The Jays have been interested in the corner-infielder since he was drafted by St. Louis in 2008 and actually selected him back in 2005.

Eric Chavez (back) plans to begin throwing in early January.
Chavez underwent a second microdiscectomy on his back in June and played only eight total games in 2009. He's hoping to return to third base for the upcoming season but still has a whole lot of proving to do.

Athletics acquired OF Michael Taylor from the Blue Jays for 1B-3B Brett Wallace.
Billy Beane now has Taylor to show for the Matt Holliday trade. With a .312/.383/.515 line over his first three professional seasons, the six-foot-six Taylor is one of the best hitting prospects in the minors. His .282/.359/.491 slashline with five homers and 19 RBI in 110 at-bats with Triple-A Lehigh Valley in 2009 suggests that he could be ready for a shot at the majors in 2010. He projects as an above average corner outfielder.

would have happened sooner but Wallace's shoulder was questionable, but he passed his MRI. also Jamey Carroll was had offers from both the A's and Dodgers and chose to sign with the Dodgers

-Oakland is closing on a one year, $5 million deal with OF Coco Crisp, ESPN.com's Buster Olney reports.
A little curious that the Athletics have elected to go with Crisp over Jack Cust when Cust would have cost about $4 million through the arbitration process. Crisp should provide fantastic defense, but his contribution on offense is anyone's guess. The 30-year old batted .228/.336/.378 in 180 at-bats for Kansas City in 2009 before undergoing surgery on both shoulders.
-Coco Crisp's impending one-year deal with the Athletics will include an option for the 2011 season.
Crisp will make a base salary of $5 million in 2010 and the option is probably worth about the same. The 30-year old hit .228/.336/.378 in 180 at-bats for Kansas City this year before undergoing surgery on both shoulders.

ESPN.com's Buster Olney has heard that the A's may be bringing free agent Justin Duchscherer back for the 2010 season.
Duchscherer is thought to be weighing three offers at the moment, one of which could be from Oakland GM Billy Beane. He has also been linked to the Yankees, Red Sox and D'Backs this offseason though all three of those teams have recently acquired new starters. Duchscherer, 32, missed all of the 2009 season while dealing with injuries and clinical depression but posted a 10-8 record with a 2.54 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over 22 starts in 2008.

Travis Buck has eliminated the bat "waggle" from his swing.
Buck told Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle that he's now finally incorporating his lower body into his swing and believes it will result in more power. The 26-year-old batted just .219/.287/.333 this year with three homers, two doubles and 10 RBI in 105 at-bats. He's hoping to crack the A's 2010 Opening Day roster as a backup outfielder.

and they finalized the deal with coco crisp

Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports Justin Duchscherer will earn a $2 million base salary in his new contract with the A's.
This deal looks even better for Oakland. Of course, Duchscherer could earn up to $5.5 million in incentives should he surpass 30 starts and 200 innings, the Athletics would surely be pleased if that came to pass. The 32-year-old right-hander should slot in as the team's No. 1 starter in front of Dallas Braden, Brett Anderson and Trevor Cahill. Expect an official announcement after Christmas, as the agreement is still pending a physical.
