NEW YORK -- Would you like to know what a $10,000 martini tastes like? A hotel in New York will make one for you.

The drink at the historic Algonquin Hotel comes complete with a loose diamond at the bottom of the glass.

And don't worry about ordering this martini by mistake -- it requires 72 hours notice to order.

The buyer also meets with a jeweler to select a gem and with the hotel staff to ensure the cocktail is delivered to the right table.

So far, no one has taken the hotel up on the offer.

World most expensive cocktail on sale
The world's most expensive cocktail went on sale in Britain this week costing a whopping £15,250 per glass.

The drink is a mix of champagne and a number of expensive liquors but the reason for the enormous cost is what is found at the bottom. ( We are talking the Dazzle, the world's most expensive cocktail, which was launched yesterday and will set him back £15,250.

For that you don't even get an olive but you do get a melange of rosé champagne, strawberry liquor, lychee liquor, lemon juice and syrup. And a ring. A pink tourmaline and diamond number set in 18-carat white gold. )

Delicately placed at the bottom of the glass is a 61/2 carat pink tourmaline and diamond ring.

Rich drinkers who would like to sample the extravagant cocktail can purchase it at an exclusive Manchester restaurant situated near Old Trafford - the football stadium of Manchester United.

"
Remy XO, Pineau des Charentes, freshly pressed grape juice, Veuve Clicquot, and a touch of edible 23-karat liquid gold. Available at the World Bar, atop the Trump World Tower, for $64, including tax and tip. Wonderfully decadent or crassly gauche? Ordinarily, we'd say the former, but something about the word "Trump"... "

It's Friday night at the World Bar, a swanky New York lounge located in the new Trump World Tower, and two waiters in spiffy cream jackets are headed our way bearing a large silver tray.

With grand flourishes, one waiter introduces himself and proceeds to hold up each bottle and announce its contents before pouring tiny amounts into the silver cocktail shaker. After mixing the Remy XO and Pineau des Charentes with ingredients such as freshly pressed grape juice, he gently pours the frothy concoction into a slender flute and tops it off with Veuve Clicquot champagne and a touch of 23-karat edible liquid gold.

The performance is so impressive we feel compelled to applaud. But what's most impressive about the drink is its price - a mind-boggling $50.

It's named "the World's Most Expensive Cocktail" and boasts ingredients rare in most bar drinks. The fruity aperitif Pineau des Charentes, for example, is not found on most bar menus, and Remy XO is a complex, pricey cognac that is aged for up to 35 years. And World Bar owner Mark Grossich was audacious enough to toss these in a drink and slap on a price that, with tax and a 20 percent tip, will put you out just over $64.

He calls it the South Beach Punch. It costs $24 a glass.

The World's Most Expensive Cognac (January 4, 2001)

Yesterday I tasted the world's most expensive bottle of cognac. It's called timeless and it was made by Hennessy from a blend of eleven cognacs dating from 1900 to 1990. Only 2,000 bottles were produced (actually to mark the millennium) and each one was numbered.

My pour was less than one ounce (I was part of a group of wine writers invited by Maurice Hennessy to sample this rare item) and I figured my measure must have cost about $250 Canadian - because the bottle in question costs $5,000 US.

The blend, by Hennessy's cellar master Yann Fillioux, was made up of the best vintage cognacs from the company's paradis (the inner sanctum of a cognac house where they keep their reserve stocks of old brandies, usually in glass carboys). They came from vintages1900, 1918, 1929, 1939, 1947, 1953, 1959, 1961, 1970, 1983 and 1990.

Each 750mL bottle of timeless comes in a crystal decanter in a brushed metal display case and a numbered book. The shape of the crystal decanter is modelled on a pebble, "a symbol of timelessness, like a river washing over the stones, terribly zen," confessed Maurice Hennessy.

There are only two bottles in Canada - one was purchased by Hy's Steak House in Toronto, the other was decimated by us hacks from the wine press at The Four Seasons Hotel tasting. Hennessy informed us that a man in Moscow, having tasted it, bought ten bottles!

And what did the world's most expensive cognac taste like? Wonderful, as it should. The colour was amber-orange and what strikes first is an ethereal perfume of oak, dried raisins, orange peel, coffee beans. The taste was more discreet (Maurice Hennessy referred to it as a "Protestant cognac") - light and spicy on the palate at first, it began to billow and expand in the mouth to an almond-marzipan finish. Except it didn't finish. It went on and on. And if I hadn't brushed my teeth before going to bed, it would probably still be there. Timeless, indeed.
