Vegas steals top spot for stolen cars
The Las Vegas area has stolen the top spot on the list of auto thefts around the nation. The National Insurance Crime Bureau says more than 22,000 vehicles were stolen in Clark County in 2006. That's down slightly from 2005, but still leads the nation.
Here are the top five areas in the country with the most car thefts:
1. Las Vegas/Paradise, NV
2. Stockton, CA
3. Visalia/Porterville, CA
4. Phoenix/Mesa/Scottsdale, AZ
5. Modesto, CA
The top five most stolen cars are as follows:
1. 1996 Honda Accord
2. 1995 Honda Civic
3. 1990 Toyota Camry
4. 1994 Saturn SL
5. 1992 Nissan Sentra
Metro is trying different methods to catch car thieves in the act. Our Crime Tracker 3 Team has showed you how Metro's auto theft unit is using bait cars equipped with tracking devices as a way to catch those taking cars and SUVs.
Police say they are making progress, but they have a ways to go. Metro estimates a car is stolen every 25 minutes in Clark County.
As for protecting your vehicle, police say use common sense. Always lock your doors, even if you will only be away for a few minutes. You may also want to invest in a steering wheel lock or a tracking device which sends a signal to police when your car is stolen.
