Receiver Quinton Patton, who was slowed during training camp with a broken finger, will miss a chunk of the season with a broken foot, Jim Harbaugh said today. Patton, who seemed to be filling the role of No. 2 receiver Thursday, suffered the injury in the first half shortly after making his first-ever NFL reception. It went for no gain.

Harbaugh said the injury - to a metacarpal bone - was not significant enough to put Patton on injured reserve, meaning the rookie is expected to play again this season. He said he was comfortable with the remaining receivers on the roster, and had particularly strong praise for Jon Baldwin, who made his 49ers debut against the Rams with two catches for 19 yards. "He's got a competitive heart," Harbaugh said.

Asked what he meant by that, Harbaugh said he couldn't articulate it but that it was a sense he had about Baldwin, whom the 49ers acquired in a trade with Kansas City last month. He said his sense was similar to how a birdwatcher can identify a specific species just by glancing at it. "I feel like sometimes I have an eye for a competitive heart," Harbaugh said. "I see it in Jon."

After Patton left the game, Kyle Williams resumed his previous role as the No. 2 receiver, playing 22 of the team's 69 snaps. Williams did not have a catch. Baldwin was next among wideouts with 16 snaps. Marlon Moore, a starter in the preseason, was inactive Thursday.

For the second week in a row, 49ers safety Donte Whitner is lashing out at the NFL over a penalty he received for a hit to an opposing player.

Whitner was called for unnecessary roughness for a hit on Rams wide receiver Chris Givens on Thursday, and on Friday Whitner said that penalty was a ridiculous call when all he was trying to do was knock the ball out of a receiver’s hands, as that receiver was leaping for a pass in the end zone.

“I think I’m just supposed to let them catch a touchdown now,” Whitner said on SiriusXM NFL Radio, via the San Francisco Chronicle. “I think that’s what the National Football League wants, but I’m not going to give them that. I’m going to continue to play physical, continue to hit the right way, lead with my shoulder, and I’m not targeting anybody’s head.”

Last week Whitner complained that his penalty for a hit on Colts running back Ahmad Bradshaw was a bad call, and the NFL agreed, confirming this week that the penalty flag shouldn’t have been thrown. We’ll see with the hit on Givens whether the NFL once again admits the officials screwed up, or whether the NFL will hit Whitner’s paycheck as hard as Whitner hits opposing players.

^^^I'll continue to say that penalty call against Whitner on Bradshaw fucked that whole Colts game up. Watching it you're like DAMN the Niners came to play!! and after that penalty it's like they're timid and too scared to get a flag thrown

Not sure what these moves are for, but eh. Guess harbs seen marecic is done for now. Very disappointed in the nfl for the bullshit with Whitner, that shouldnt have been a flag and shouldnt have been a fine, glad hes appealing, he needs to talk to merton hanks and remind him of his days

I thought that penalty/fine is just ridiculous.....even whitner said himself if he is supposed to just let people score now? Lol......and he led in with the shoulder and he said he was aiming toward his body

and the Skelton signing isn't that crazy. He's garbage but so are most 3rd string qb's. He has some experience and BJ Daniels is inept as fuck and is practice squad material.

An open letter to 49ers quarterback

Dear Colin,

Stop acting like a jerk.

Your press conferences are an embarrassment. If you’re uncomfortable or shy, that’s one thing. That’s not how you come across. You sound dismissive, combative, and rude. There’s no excuse for rude.

I feel I can talk about this because we had a similar situation in our family a few years ago. Our soccer star turned out to be a far better player than we ever expected and we ended up driving all over the state to go to games. The downside was, when we lost, she’d sulk in the back of the car, refuse to speak to anyone, and bark at us when we had the nerve to ask if she’d like something to eat, for example.

Finally, enough was enough. We’re sorry you lost, we said, but get over yourself. It’s not about you. She did and she’s been a wonderful person every since.

She was 12 at the time.

You’re considerably older, Colin, so there should be no excuses, and here’s why:

It’s your job: The NFL is a multi-billion-dollar business. Players are required to appear in public. Those press conferences aren’t going away just because you don’t like doing them. The league and the 49ers are selling tickets, jerseys and, frankly, you. This is how your salary is paid. You will have media availability after every single game. You’ll probably have one, and likely more than one, press conference during the week. Those are facts. Deal with it.

The media is not your enemy: The vibe you give off is that these press people are a bunch of dopes who are only deserving of contempt. You don’t need to take any time to answer their questions because they are idiots. I’d just say this: most of those men and women were there before you arrived and they’ll be there after you are gone. You’ve been to one Super Bowl. I’ll bet most of them have been to several, not to mention international sporting events. They are well-educated, highly trained professionals who do this for a living. And by the way, since they’ve seen players come and go, they’re evaluating you by the way you act. The day may come when you’d like to have a little understanding. People treat other people the way they are treated. Just sayin’.

It is not that hard to say nothing: This isn’t an inquisition, just a press conference. They ask questions, but you don’t have to bare your soul. Just give a nice, pleasant, generic answer that doesn’t sound like you are offended to be asked. The Giants’ Buster Posey is a master of the craft. He answers everything, talks in full sentences, and doesn’t say anything interesting or controversial. And people love Buster. It’s not that hard.

Coach Jim Harbaugh is not a good role model for public relations: The impression we get is that he’s encouraging you, implicitly or not, to blow this stuff off and treat it like an intrusion. Honestly, he’s the last person I’d listen to about that. Particularly after the Aldon Smith debacle, where his much-vaunted values went out the window so he could play Smith in an important game and then acted as if he’d discussed the incident when he hadn’t, Harbaugh’s credibility is zero.

You are wasting your time with Twitter rebuttals: I see where you “favorited” some tweets that were negative to you. I assume you are thinking you are showing that you are battling — you against the haters. What you really did is make those trolls’ day. Those morons are all over social media and their biggest wish of their empty little lives is to get a big star to acknowledge them. You just did.

You are hurting your brand: Yeah, we all know how it is all about social media now. And sure, it is a wonderful thing to be featured in nude, beefcake shots in national magazines and on the red carpet at galas. But those things come and go with the autumn winds. The real stars, LeBron James, Peyton Manning, and even to this day — Joe Montana — learned how to handle themselves in public settings. They don’t go all sullen because someone asked for their thoughts.

They realize that they have a relatively short time to make an impression. And that the kind of impression they make is up to them.

You need to realize that too. Soon.

While i agree Kap seems to act like a fag at times, i dont agree with the author and i think its a gay ass rule for these guys to have mandatory press conferences. Sports are emotionally charged. Would YOU be happy if you just played a shitty game and lost? I know i wouldn't. Id be a dick to the media too. Id be a dick to just about anyone who tried to fuck with me after that. In fact, that to me shows that the player actually CARED what happened out there. If i saw a guy laughing it up in the locker room, i would question his loyalty to the team or desire to play the game he is getting paid millions to do. Thats just me though.

Totally agree and the author does sound like an entitled illogical fanboy. One of those people who thinks because they watch the NFL or buy a ticket that the players somehow owe them something.

Guess what YOU are paying to watch someone play a game. The have absolutely no obligation to you.

No NFL game is easy! 49ers vs Texans ain't got shiit to do with the Seahawks. Shiit texans are gonna be mad if anything.

Everything is goin right for the hawks this season that's what leads to a great season. Don't crown yourselves yet though.

Some people just aren't good with the press, doesn't mean shit. Bill Belichick, Jay Cutler, etc. Shit, anyone remember Ricky Williams rookie season he would do interviews with his helmet still on?? Haha major social anxiety issues there.

I know most athletes have huge egos but some still have a difficult time with public speaking, like most mortal humans do.

Nobody crowned the Seahawks yet. I was being real - I think a loss like that are the worst for a team. To be up big then lose in OT. Crushing. Plus Schaub his confidence could be shot. That late INT was brutal, fans burning his jersey etc. Cushing will be out as well due to a concussion.
