HT: 6'0½"
WT: 185 lbs.
40 Time: 4.37

Biography: Two-year starter awarded all-conference honors as a senior after posting career-best numbers of 90 receptions/1276 yards/8 TDs. Junior totals included 56/746/7.

Positives: Adequately sized wideout with a polished game. Smooth releasing off the line into pass routes, displays good quickness and the ability to get separation from defenders. Extends his hands to make the reception away from his frame and effectively adjusts to errant throws. Sells routes, looks the ball into his hands and possesses both soft and strong hands. Good eye/hand coordination. Comes back to the ball out of breaks and uses his frame to shield away defenders. Consistently finds the open space on the field. Holds onto the ball after taking big hits.

Negatives: Lacks a second gear and does not play to his 40 time. Average skill running after the catch.

Analysis: Jenkins displayed a lot of improvement in his game the past two seasons and is a natural pass catcher with the skills necessary to be a productive third wideout at the next level.

Projection: 2-3

Niners should have picked either Fleener or Stephen Hill ..

AJ Jenkins is fast yes and got the speed needed...

but we needed a deep threat like Stephen Hill ..dude is 6'4 and can catch...runs a 4.37....

but I'm going to have to settle with AJ, hopefully he does bring something to the team ..

Alex Smith has no excuses now, he has a full set of good receivers.........

Baalke has been killing it the last couple drafts so Ill just wait until AJ Jenkins hits the field. That being said they must of not felt Hill or Fleener were nowhere near as good as everyone thought they were unless they plan on trading up in the 2nd round.

A lot of people on here complained about Aldon Smith too....lol Aldon Smith turned out to be a fucking MONSTER

"@MaioccoCSN: Jim Harbaugh: GM Trent Baalke wrote "AJ Jenkins" and put it in envelope last night. He was guy 49ers targeted in that spot."

I'm liking it already

Baalke said this is the guy they wanted. He was their type of player that fit their type of system and had the intangibles they look for in their players. Great speed, great hands, great work ethic, etc. Sounds a lot like we heard about Aldon Smith and we all saw how that turned out.

49ers select WR A.J. Jenkins

NFL Draft instant analysis -- 49ers select A.J Jenkins

Matt Maiocco gives an immediate reaction to the 49ers' selection of A.J Jenkins

The 49ers selected Illinois wide receiver A.J. Jenkins in the first round of the NFL draft on Thursday.

Jenkins (6-foot, 190 pounds) caught 90 passes for 1,276 yards for Illinois as a senior. Jenkins has nice speed, running a 4.37 at the combine.

Depth at wide receiver turned into a major issue for the 49ers in the playoffs after injuries to Joshua Morgan and Ted Ginn, along with the mid-season release of Braylon Edwards.

In the 49ers' loss to the New York Giants in the NFC championship game, Michael Crabtree accounted for one catch for 3 yards. Kyle Williams, who also drew the starting assignment, did not have a reception.

This offseason, the 49ers added Randy Moss and Mario Manningham to the receiving corps. Moss returns from retirement. If Moss returns to his pre-2010 form and the 49ers' receivers remain healthy, it might be difficult for the rookie to earn playing time.

However, Jenkins has the speed to stretch a defense. If he develops quickly, he can make an impact early in his career.

The Illinois coaching staff linked Jenkins’ skill set to that of former Illini standout — and 49ers 2003 draft pick — Brandon Lloyd.

Was watching highlights on AJ Jenkins....I'm impressed and I like the pick..

I don't see Crabtree going anywhere, I think he'll shine in the 2012 season along with Moss, Manningham, and Jenkins...

I do see Kyle out tho....
