Ariza calls Mosley a quitter and thinks Pacquiao will knock him out

By Chris Williams: Alex Ariza, the strength and conditioning coach for Manny Pacquiao, really likes Juan Manuel Marquez and sees him as a tough opponent for Manny Pacquiao. A fighter that Ariza doesn’t seem interested in seeing fight Pacquiao is 39-year-old Shane Mosley. In an article at philstar.com, Ariza says “Mosley? He’ll be tired after 15 minutes so what’s the point of that fight? Manny knocks him out and probably Manny won’t even train for that fight. That guy is a quitter. He quit against [Floyd] Mayweather in three rounds. What do you think he’s gonna do when Manny starts to let loose his hands five or 15 seconds after the bell rings?” I wonder why Ariza wasn’t complaining like this when Margarito was selected for Pacquiao?

In fairness to Mosley, he is after all 39-years-old and at an age that most fighters are long retired. I think Mosley, when he was fighting at lightweight, would have beaten Pacquiao but not now. Ariza could end up really disappointed because Mosley might very well be selected by Top Rank promoter Bob Arum to face Pacquiao next instead of Marquez. Arum likes the idea of putting Pacquiao in with Mosley. You can understand why because Mosley is a more recognizable fighter in the U.S. compared to Pacquiao’s last two opponents Joshua Clottey and Antonio Margarito.

If Pacquiao’s still been able to get respectable pay-per-view numbers fighting those less than popular fighters, then a fight against Mosley will likely do even better. The best part of all is Pacquiao wouldn’t need another one of his handicap catch-weights to weaken Mosley, because Shane hasn’t looked good in his last two fights. I can see Pacquiao’s team still insisting on having Mosley fight at a catch-weight, but it’s not really necessary. He’s likely diminished enough for Pacquiao to beat without a catch-weight handicap.

Shaw Fires Back at Cunningham: Bradley Destroys Devon

By Ryan Burton

In an earlier story on BoxingScene.com, Devon Alexander's manager/trainer, Kevin Cunningham, expressed his frustration at what he perceives to be a lack of urgency in getting the details finalized for the unification with Timothy Bradley, which is scheduled for January 29. Both Alexander and Bradley agreed to the fight weeks ago.

Cunningham feels that both fighters should already be doing their press duties and the fight itself should have a venue solidified so that Alexander and Bradley can have uninterrupted training camps.

In a recent BoxingScene story, Shaw was quoted as saying that he wanted to make a Pacquiao-Bradley fight, after Bradley beats Alexander in January. Cunningham advised Shaw to worry about the Bradley-Alexander promotion before he looks at future fights.

Shaw told BoxingScene that Cunningham should be worried about his fighter and let the promoters do their jobs.

"Kevin Cunningham needs to worry about how he trains Devon, especially based on his last fight. He is too focused on what I'm doing and saying and not focused on his fighter or his promoter Don King," Shaw told BoxingScene.com.

Shaw feels that Cunningham might be getting nervous about the upcoming fight. The New Jersey based promoter said he was already looking ahead to Pacquiao because of his confidence in his fighter and his fighter's trainer.

"That is just another reason why I believe that Tim Bradley destroys Devon Alexander. You have a different quality fighter and different quality trainer. Bradley's trainer Joel Diaz trains Bradley while all Kevin Cunningham does is run his mouth all day and night," Shaw said.

Shaw ended our conversation with a few words of advice for Cunningham - "Here is my tip to Kevin, stop calling web sites and get into the gym with your fighter. January 29th is almost around the corner

Haye-Chagaev Could Head To a Purse Bid, Kohl Irate

By Ruslan Chikov

The duel between WBA heavyweight champion David Haye and mandatory challenger Ruslan Chagaev could be heading to a purse bid. The promoter for Chagaev, Klaus-Peter Kohl of Universum, is very upset with some of the recent comments that came from Haye and his co-promoter, Sauerland Event.

Kohl read some comments where Wilfried and Kalle Sauerland were concerned with Chagaev's hepatitis B status. Chagaev's battle with hepatitis B derailed a rematch with Sauerland boxer Nikolai Valuev. Chagaev's hepatitis B did not prevent him from being an opponent for Wladimir Klitschko. The other problem Kohl had was Haye's demand for the fight to take place in England.

"I have read statements made by Wilfried Sauerland and his son Kalle, and they have left me very annoyed. Here is another attempt to get our boxer Ruslan Chagaev out of their way. We are not going to tolerate it a second time," Kohl said.

"According to the best virologists, he is not contagious. Here again, a campaign against Ruslan starts. I will not permit it this time. For me, this is a sign that David Haye and Sauerland fear that they are going to lose the belt and it could burst the big payday with Klitschko. Moreover, who says the fight against Haye will take place in England? If there is no agreement on the market, place and time - then the fight goes to a purse bid at the WBA's headquarters in Panama. And then the winning bidder has the right to make that decision."

Mike Tyson Claims Self-Defense in $25 Million Assault Suit

Mike Tyson claims he needed to get aggressive with a paparazzo at LAX last year because he felt the photog had put him in "immediate danger" ... this according to legal docs obtained by TMZ.

The docs were submitted in response to a $25 million lawsuit filed earlier this year -- in which Tyson was accused of assaulting and battering Antonio Echevarria in an airport terminal last November.

In the new papers, Tyson claims he doesn't owe the guy a single penny because he was provoked -- and insists that he merely acted in a manner that was "necessary for his self-defense" and the "protection of others."

As we previously reported, Echevarria shot footage of the incident -- which was heavily edited before we got a hold of it -- showing an angry Tyson charging towards the photog and saying, "I will kill you."

Tyson was arrested moments after the incident -- but the L.A. City Attorney ultimately rejected the case citing "insufficient evidence

Cotto vs Chavez Jr. Still The Plan For March, Says Arum

By Jhonny Gonzalez

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum says nothing has changed for the career route of Miguel Cotto. If Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. beats Alfonso Gomez on December 4 in California, Arum is still planning to put him in the ring with Cotto in March 2011. New York and Las Vegas are under consideration to host the fight. Cotto would make the first defense of his WBA junior middleweight title.

As BoxingScene.com reported on Tuesday, a rematch between Cotto and Margarito is impossible for early 2011 because of the time required for Margarito to recover from the injuries he suffered in last Saturday's loss to Manny Pacquiao. Arum says the rematch is still a possible option for the future. Margarito had surgery to repair a broken right orbital bone. He needs to stay away from the gym for at least 60 days.

"The plan is for Miguel and Chavez Jr. to fight in the spring. I don't want to waste more time with Miguel not fighting. I feel Antonio looked good enough to be an option but I do not think he will be available to fight in March because he was operated on and it takes time to recover. But he showed courage and the public liked the fight, "Arum told Carlos Gonzalez

Andre Dirrell: Arthur Abraham Will Knock Carl Froch Out

By Ruslan Chikov

Super middleweight Andre Dirrell is picking "King" Arthur Abraham to knock Carl Froch out on November 27 in Helsinki, Finland. Quoted by the Golzka paper, Dirrell said "Abraham by knockout" when asked for his prediction on the final fight in the third stage of the Super Six Boxing Classic. Dirrell fought both boxers in the Super Six before withdrawing from the tournament with neurological issues.

In the first stage of the Super Six, Dirrell lost a close twelve round decision to Froch. In the second stage, Dirrell beat Abraham by disqualification when King Arthur punched him while he was already down on the canvas.

"I think Abraham will be on his A-game and so will Froch, but Abraham, the stronger and more defensive man, will win," Dirrell said.

Freddie Roach was on the UFC reality show Ultimate Fighter tonight. I thought it was super dope that he came in and did some technique and pad work with the fighters. Who better to improve the hands of these guys(especially these guys cause their striking is fucking horrendous) than the man who trains the best in the world??

Huh. I don't know if Oscar could make Ricky's 200 lb. catch weight.

@ 135 lbs., Marquez has a shot against Manny. Fast forward to 2010, and Manny isn't 135 anymore. LOL. He destroys Marquez in less than 4 @ 147.

Oh, and Manny will KO Shane for the first time in his career, and I don't care about Shane's punching power, because, while it is tremendous, Manny isn't going to stick around and get caught. He'll want to prove a point, especially to Floyd, and go for the kill early.

But Shane's shot...I forgot. That fucking Sergio Mora did it...that bastard.

Arum won’t be matching Pacquiao up with Paul Williams or Sergio Martinez

By Chris Williams: If you were one of those many fans who were hoping the winner of Saturday’s WBC middleweight clash between champion Sergio Martinez and Paul Williams would get a chance to fight World Boxing Council junior middleweight champion Manny Pacquiao in one of his catch-weight fights that he’s becoming known for, you can pretty forget that from ever happening. Earlier today, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum ruled out anymore fights by Pacquiao against bigger fighters because of how beat up Pacquiao got against pumped up welterweight Antonio Margarito last Saturday night in their catch-weight fight at 150 pounds.

Although this really wasn’t a authentic junior middleweight with big power and great boxing skills that Pacquiao was fighting, Arum still considers the welterweight Margarito a big fighter and doesn’t want Pacquiao to be taking on any other similar sized fighters in the future. This is bad news if you’re Williams or Martinez, because one of the reasons for those guys fighting was for the winner to get a shot against Pacquiao. It would have been a perfect setup for a fight against Pacquiao, but it won’t happen now.

In an article at Yahoo Sports News, Arum said “At this point, I don’t want to put Manny in with another big guy, a guy even bigger than Margarito. It’s not that he [Pacquiao] couldn’t beat them or that he couldn’t handle them, but it’s like a great racehorse. I cant keep putting him in with bigger, stronger guys without wearing him out. That fight really affected him physically. He took a lot more beating in that fight than he did in his others. He got hurt. he’s banged up a little bit. It’s tough giving away that kind of weight and size.”

Arum sure does have good timing in stopping Pacquiao from fighting bigger fighters after fighting two smaller fighters – Miguel Cotto [only 5'7"], Joshua Clottey [ only 5'8"], and one taller with zero hand speed and limited defense, Antonio Margarito [5'11"]. Sergio Martinez is 5’10″, but has great skills and excellent speed and movement. And Paul Williams is 6’1″, and throws nonstop punches. Pacquiao would have been in serious trouble against either of them. It’s too bad Arum didn’t match Pacquiao up with those guys before taking on Clottey and Cotto, but of course Pacquiao would have had a great chance of losing, so it’s not surprising that he was never put in with Martinez and Williams. I honestly don’t think Arum ever seriously considered matching Pacquiao up with Martinez or Williams. Those fighters are a whole different ball game compared to Cotto, Clottey and Margarito.

Let’s be clear about Pacquiao’s paper title win. He’s not going to defend it, and if Pacquiao did try and stick around at the weight class for long, he’d get wore down by the bigger fighters like Alfredo Angulo and James Kirkland and his career would be dramatically shortened because of his lack of size. Even if Pacquiao dodged those two guys, which is pretty much a move I would expect of Pacquiao, he would still take heavy punishment against the likes of Erislandy Lara, Saul Alvarez, Kermit Cintron and Vanes Martirosyan. Pacquiao couldn’t dodge all of them and the catch-weight that he would likely fight them all at wouldn’t be enough to weaken them sufficiently not to take punishment. I think Pacquiao would likely win all those fights, but he would get hit much more than he did against the slow punching Margarito.

Holyfield vs. Williams fight canceled

Dan Ambrose: The December 9th fight between 48-year-old Evander Holyfield (43-10-2, 28 KO’s) and 38-year-old journeyman Sherman Williams (34-11-2, 19 KO’s) has been canceled, according to Dan Rafael. The fight, which was supposed to have taken place at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan, had already been postponed twice on November 5th and November 12th. There’s no reason given why the fight has been canceled, but the previous cancellations were due to poor ticket sales.

Holyfield last fought in April, defeating 42-year-old Francois Botha by an 8th round stoppage. Holyfield hadn’t fought before that since losing a controversial 12 round majority decision to WBA heavyweight champion Nikolay Valuev in December 2008. Holyfield entertains the goal of sticking around long enough to unify the four heavyweight titles. However, it seems almost impossible for Holyfield to achieve his goal due to his faded skills, his infrequent fights, and his lack of success when he’s been given chances to fight for titles against beatable past heavyweight champions Sultan Ibragimov and Valuev.

Holyfield still has power and might have a small chance if he could get WBA heavyweight champion David Haye to fight him, but the chances of that happening are remote. IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko recently said that he would never fight Holyfield because he has too much respect for him. Wladimir’s brother, WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko likely feels the same way as Wladimir and probably won’t be giving Holyfield a shot at his title.

If Holyfield wants to fight for one of the titles, he’s going to have to work his way to the mandatory spot by fighting his way through the top contenders to get to that spot. The problem for Holyfield is that he doesn’t look good enough to beat any of the top heavyweight contenders at this point in his career

From Oscar's twitter:

Makes me sick to my stomach when a fighter does not appreciate what and how much you have done for him.

^^Talking about Mosley!

Also, I think Pacquiao has earned the right to fight guys his own size if that's what he wants. Paul Williams isn't 6'1 he's 6'3, they lie about his height. Here he is standing next to Chris Arreola who is listed at 6'4 (tell me williams is 6'1):

Here is next to Margarito who dwarfed pacquiao:

So 5'6 vs 6'3, it's understandable if pacquiao and company don't want to take that kind of size difference at the moment.

As for Martinez dude walks around at 200 pounds. He's talking about fighting Lucien Bute at 168 pounds if he beats Williams on saturday, so that should tell you how heavy he is used to being (he weighed 177 pounds only a few weeks ago).
