Yuriorkis Gamboa vs. Andrey Isaev on Jan. 9 on ESPN

Odlanier Solis and Yuriorkis Gamboa

ARENA-CEO Ahmet Öner will present his next US show on January 9th in Primm, Nevada. The show will be featured live on ESPN Friday Night Fights. For the first time Cuban Olympic 2004 gold medallists Yuriorkis Gamboa and Odlanier Solis will be on the same card in the United States as Solis will give his US debut.

(@naner, Solis looks to be in much better shape!)

Fast rising featherweight star Yuriorkis Gamboa (12-0, 10KOs) returns to Primm after two successful appearances at “Terrible’s Casino & Resort” against Darling Jimenez and Al Seeger. “El Ciclon de Guantanamo” will step into the ring against strong Belarussian Andrey Isaev (19-1, 6KOs, #2 WBO ratings).

“This will be Gamboa’s final test before fighting for his first world title”, states promoter Ahmet Öner. At the 46th annual WBC Convention in Chengdu, China, Gamboa was nominated to face Elio Rojas for the interim world championship. “If Yuri can overcome Isaev Rojas will be next”, adds Öner.

As additional highlight the German based promoter finally presents his Cubaen heavyweight sensation Odlanier Solis to the American public. Like Gamboa Solis is a 2004 Olympic gold medallist and won his first 12 pro-fights, including 8 kos. The WBC international and latino champion is already rated on #14 by the WBC and is ready to shine in the US.

“I am very happy and proud that these two future champions will be fighting on the same card”, says Öner. “I have been asked several times when Solis will finally come over. Now he is already training in Miami. I am sure that he will make big noise in the heavyweight scene. Maybe he can even help the division back to old glance. With Solis and Gamboa ARENA is ready to finally conquer the US and the entire world.”

Sup with Margarito? He turns down Shane Mosley cuz Golden Boy "only" offered Margarito $2 million and Margs wants more $$$. Meanwhile he turned down $4 million from Paul Williams??? lollercopter Tony, lollercopter....

Paul Williams Targets Sergei Dzinziruk, Wants Mosley Too

By Rick Reeno

At the present, Shane Mosley is without a dance partner for his HBO date of January 24. After Antonio Margarito turned Mosley down, Golden Boy Promotions immediately changed direction and plan to pursue a possible fight with WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto.

Mosley does have another option, if he’s willing to take it. Paul Williams, who decisioned Margarito last year, is ready and willing to fight Mosley on the January date. The weight is not an issue; Williams would make the Mosley fight at 147 or 154.

Speaking with BoxingScene.com, Williams says that he doesn’t expect to receive any phone calls from Mosley or Margarito. He doesn’t believe a Margarito rematch will ever happen and he’s decided to move on. Williams believes that Margarito is avoiding any risk before a potential rematch with Miguel Cotto in the summer of 09.

“I would definitely take the Mosley fight. I don't see them calling us. I definitely don't see that. We made offers to them plenty of times. That's not even in the ball park. I'm past Margarito now. He's not going to fight me. They offered him all sorts of money and he turned it down. We offered him $4 million, but it's a tough $4 million. What's the point of fighting him now? I'm looking for bigger and better fights,” Williams said.

“I believe the money with Mosley wasn't what he thought it would be and he knows that Mosley stands a chance of beating him and that would knock him out of the picture. I think he felt it was too risky and a loss would make his marketability go down. He probably wants to see what the purse will be for the Cotto rematch, maybe $3 or 4 million, but I doubt it. I thought Cotto was busting Margarito up until he got stopped. He just couldn’t keep up with the stamina and the pressure of Margarito. Margarito just kept on coming and he couldn't keep up once he got tired.”

Manager/trainer George Peterson echoes his fighter’s feelings on Margarito. He doesn’t believe a rematch will ever happen.

"Is that the same Margarito we're talking about? Yeah, that's the same Margarito. That's the guy who said a while back that he couldn't get a fight, that everyone was running from him. The Tijuana Tornado turned into a soft breeze off of South Beach," Peterson said.

Williams returns on November 29 against Verno Phillips at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California. The WBO interim-junior middleweight title is on the line. Williams vacated his WBO welterweight title to get permission from the sanctioning body to compete for their junior middleweight version. Phillips has been inactive since winning the IBF 154-pound title from Cory Spinks in the early part of the year. He turns 39-years-old on the day of the fight.

Undefeated Sergei Dzinziruk is the WBO’s full champion at junior middleweight. Williams would like to fight him for the full title after winning the interim version. Dzinziruk makes a lot of money by sticking to his backyard of Germany, and a lot of fighters are reluctant to fight him on his home turf. Williams is not one of those fighters. He says if the fight makes more financial sense in Germany, he will pack his bags and travel to Dzinziruk’s backyard.

“Of course, that would be my next move. I know he's good fighter. I heard he gets paid well out there, so I might have to take a trip to Germany. You can be the best dog in your town, but when you go out of town and start whooping on people, then you are the best dog,” Williams said.

“The guys at welterweight don't want to fight nobody. I had to move up. We'll go back to 160 too; it's no problem for me. I'd love to go in there with Kelly [Pavlik]. He's still the champion. The hardest part is to get them to sign the contract. All they do is talk on the internet all day. We don't back down from anyone. I want my fans to know that I plan to put on a good show on November 29 with Verno Phillips. I got a birthday beating to hand out.”

Peterson tells BoxingScene that his fighter is still focused on simultaneously dominating the competition at 147, 154 and 160-pounds.

"When it comes down to still making a statement on who is going to dominate welterweight, junior middleweight and middleweight, we want to stake our claim. I see no reason, based on what's out there, that we are going to be denied. They are leapfrogging him and he's got one heck of an attitude. There are absolutely none who want to challenge him. All we can do is sit back in the saddle and ride tall,” Peterson said.

I think the thing with Tony is that his road to the top was so long that he doesn't want to risk anything that could put him in jeopardy. No one would give this guy a shot at taking the top spot, until Cotto did, and he capitalized on it.

I think he'll end up taking a tune up fight, and getting his big payday in the rematch. I don't know if thats a good call though because he has some pretty good momentum behind him with his win.

I know though, that he wants no parts of P-Will. I actually think he's intimidated by him. He's bigger, faster, and quite possibly stronger than Tony...and he beat him already.

I agree, both mosley and p-will are too risky for him. Funny thing is that win or lose, cotto will want a rematch with margarito no matter what. I guess it wouldn't be "as big" if margs lost prior I guess.

And since they both have the same promoter they will fight on the same card, jan/feb, which will set up the rematch later in the year.

I agree. The real funny/ironic thing is that since P-Will is fighting Phillips for Phillips' 154 title at the end of the month, the WBC will be stripping Williams of his 147 belt. Which will become vacant. Cotto will most likely fight for this belt against whoever he faces next! Which means of course if Margarito beats Cotto in the rematch, he'll get back the belt he lost to Paul Williams without having to fight him!! lol now that is some wacky shit!

Hm, that is pretty crazy. Why would they strip him of the 147 belt though ? Doesn't a year have to pass without him facing his mandatory ? Thats wack.

I like Tony, but for all of that most feared/avoided fighter stuff him and his people talk. At least be about what you sprout ! And I honestly don't see what Cotto could have possibly done better in his fight with Tony, I just think it was physically and stylistically a horrible matchup for him.

I just can't see the rematch going any different, unless Cotto bumps his cardio game up ten fold.

Williams is a freak of nature. He is looking for big money fights and his tall lanky frame will allow him to bounce up and down through out a few weight classes.

The cool thing about Williams imo is that he isn't just looking for big money fights, he's calling out EVERYONE from 147 to 160. I mean he's fighting Verno Phillips at 154 in two weeks (Nov 29th) for Phillip's 154 belt, and Phillips by no means is a big name, this just after fighting some no name at 160 last month. Not too mention he also called out Sergei Dzinziruk, who no one fucking knows except in Germany.

I really like what Williams is doing, staying active and fighting anyone/anytime/anyplace in three different weight classes. He is like a oldschool fighter, which is super rare these days.

I think his first loss humbled him and made him a beast. He's fighting like he knows this won't last forever. He has a sense of urgency now. He is being ducked by alot of people so he is doing any and everything he can to stay busy til the money fights come his way. He is basically cornering all these fighters in until they have no choice. If he gets rid of all of their options and after they destroy each other, they have no choice but to fight him. Not all fighters can do that. his body gives him all those extra options. Look at Chad Dawson for example. He'll get ducked and really only have the option to go up. Williams is gonna go up and down and if he can stay healthy, he'll make history doin it.

^ Agreed.

Like I've said before, I don't think theres anyone at 47 who would be able to deal with the physical advantages that Paul has. Especially not a motivated and hungry Paul. He slipped came in 9 pounds overweight and lost his first fight, and was humbled and humiliated by it.

He's on a rampage now, and I feel sorry for whoever is in his path.

I like David Haye's spirit but he's going to fight the wrong Klitschko. Vitali has an iron chin and has only gone the distance once meaning he's KO'd every opponent he's ever beat besides one, which means he'll beat David Haye, he's just too much. Wlad has a glass jaw though, Haye would have the best chance at beating him. Regardless, hope Haye wins!

David Haye Proclaims - "I'm Going After Vitali Klitschko"

David Haye’s manager Adam Booth has accused the Klitschkos of backtracking following the British boxers outstanding performance against Monte Barrett.

Haye was due to fight IBF, IBO and WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in London next summer. It now looks increasingly likely that Haye will instead face WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko.

Speaking to Setanta Sports News Booth said:

“At first they were talking about Wladimir, now they pull Wladimir out and offer me Vitali.”

Booth added that it was a case of either fighting the brother “with better punches and a weaker chin [Wladimir] or the one with the better chin but who has slowed considerably over the last few years [Vitali]”.

Meanwhile David Haye said he ‘doesn’t care’ which Klitschko he fights.

“I watched that fight [Vitali against Samuel Peter] and I thought to myself ‘is this it?’ Is this the mountain I’ve got to climb? I can do it, I know I can.

“There are so many things he did that I can exploit with my speed and power. Even the punches he throws I can see coming!

“I think I’m the best and I’m willing to fight the best to prove it. Just like at cruiserweight. A lot of people said you haven’t got a chance of beating [Jean-Marc] Mormeck; you haven’t got a chance of beating [Enzo] Maccarinelli. Those are the guys I went after.”

“Now everyone’s saying you haven’t got a chance against Vitali, so I’m going after the guy who’s solid as a rock.”
