Thank god they DFA'd Johnson. Im all for letting pitchers pitch their way outta slump, but we arent in may anymore. We're gettin into the dog days and it was time for the experiment to end.

If it werent for johnson, the a's would have a 7-8 game lead on the division.

They pretty much put him in every role that a reliever might be asked to fill (outside of an emergency spot start) and he failed miserably in every single one of them... After seeing that he can turn a blowout lead into a save situation without recording an out, there was literally nothing else they could do with him. I don't think I've ever seen any player on any team given so many chances with better players in AAA waiting to be called up.

Only cuz of how much money we wasted on him. Oh well. The good thing about being in a tight division race is the A's assuming we win the division will show up when the postseason begins

The A's are one of the six teams in talks with the Red Sox about a Jon Lester trade according to Ken Rosenthal. Lester only makes another $4.5M this year and is a free agent next year, so it wouldn't take as much to get him as it did Samardzija. It seems like he's most likely to end up in Pittsburg, but we'll see. The Red Sox only have 2 starting pitchers from their current rotation returning next year so some combination of Chavez/Milone/Pomeranz might look good to them.

Lester has been scratched from his next start so it looks like a trade is imminent.

So we basically just gave up Cespedes to have Lester for 3 months? The fuck?

Jon Lester Traded To Oakland For Yoenis Cespedes

The A's, with the best record in baseball, are unequivocally going for it, acquiring starter Jon Lester from the Red Sox. But man, this was more than a typical deadline rental: the trade is reportedly Lester and Jonny Gomes for Yoenis Cespedes.

The details of the trade were first reported by WEEI's Alex Speier. Jeff Passan adds that the A's will also be sending a competitive-balance draft pick (slotted to follow the second round), while Boston is throwing in cash.

Billy Beane, just stockpiling pitchers—no matter how many starters they've got, Lester is a big weapon for the postseason. But he's a free agent after this season, and Cespedes is an awful lot to give up. The power-hitting outfielder is going to love batting in Fenway (and is a free agent after next season.)

Happy trade deadline day. Buckle your damn seatbelts.
