Man, I'm just going to share a little something. One of the saddest thing's I ever did see.
I was working at this grocery store in Modesto, and we have about 3-4 bums that frequent the store to buy their fix of King Cobra for the hour. This one time, A "bum" came in and it just about broke my heart. It was this lady, she looked to be about 45 years old. She came in asking me if I saw $10 on the ground that she had lost. That was the first dagger in my heart. A bum losing what was probably her days earnings. I looked at her face, and she stared at me as if her entire family and friends were all killed in front of her. Now here is the thing that was hard for me to take in: She looked like she had only been a bum for a month or two. It was like she had children still in highschool, and she was still wearing her work clothes, only they have been covering her body since she has been on the streets. They were nice clothers, just terribly worn out. I think she was wearing slacks and a knit sweater. She was still carrying a purse with her. She didn't look like a nasty crack addict, just a middle aged woman without a home or anyone to care. She walked about as slow as a snail and just stared at the ground like she was trying to relive the moments that lead her to the streets, trying to figure out where things went wrong.
I really can't put into words what I saw, but it was one of the most gut wrenching sights I have ever witnessed. I feel sorry for every bum out there, drug addict or not. Sometimes I buy them food, sometimes I give them cash so they can go and buy more heroin. Whatever it is I can do to make them just a little happier, I can and will.
