@ParkBoyz

“I don't see the logic in that statement.. How can any step forward in a positive direction be considered "doing less" to accomplish an ultimate goal?”

Is it really a step forward in a positive direction or is it meant to not be a step at all but rather a final destination? What incentive is there to incorporate “black history” into the general education system and mass public consciousness? Isn’t the reply instead “Well they already have Black History Month!”? Can’t it be interpreted more as an impairment to action than a call to action?

” F.B.I Stooge?”

Everyone knows he worked with the FBI to undermine the Panthers in LA and was involved in the killings of Huggins and Carter.

“For you to reduce its focus on just but a few great men like "MLK" and "Booker T" is to ignore the great depth of history among diasporic Africa in America.”

Are you really that far removed from the real world and/or the U.S. education system? I didn’t reduce Black History month to the greatest black hits of A&E biography.

” If for now all we get is a month, or 28 days to commemorate them, so be it, that's one step closer, why complain?“

That’s part of what I’m getting at. Is it really a step closer to anything? If so, what and how?

I still am having a hard time trying to grasp your logic.. Black History Month can in no way be a "final destination", as you put it, because if you understood the history behind it, you'd know that it basically progressed and evolved from a single-day holiday (Fredrick Douglas' birthday).. Then it evolved into a "Black History Week", honoring the two most influential people concerned with freedom, Lincoln and Douglas. Then people like W.E.B Du Bois entered the scene, who's birthday was February, 23rd, along with him and a few others caused them to just make the entire month of February a Black History Month.. So how can this possibly be a final destination, or hinder the process when intentions were good, remain good, and became more recognized as time passed, only to expand? What's stopping the expansion?

Everyone knows he worked with the FBI to undermine the Panthers in LA and was involved in the killings of Huggins and Carter.

Everyone does not know that, that's why I told you to stop reading so many Ann Coulter articles, that is conspiracy bullshit. If it were proven, Karenga would of been dead a long time ago..

Are you really that far removed from the real world and/or the U.S. education system? I didn’t reduce Black History month to the greatest black hits of A&E biography.

Actually you did, which shows how far removed you are from "U.S education" and history.

That’s part of what I’m getting at. Is it really a step closer to anything? If so, what and how?[/QUOTE]

God, your logic is so twisted... How is it not a step closer? It is a step closer to recognition of responsibility, of understanding and empathy, closer to a balanced curriculum, to knowledge of self.. We are being forced by T.V and some schools every month of February to listen, because of that it may strike a cord with the public, inspire future minds, or give birth to another movement, and/or expand on Black History Month once again, then again until we can have a truly equal playing field.

Abraham Lincoln didn't give a shit about blacks for those that didn't know....

Quote:

"I have no purpose to introduce political and social equality between the white and black races. There is a physical difference between the two, which, in my judgment, will probably forever forbid their living together upon the footing of perfect equality; and inasmuch as it becomes a necessity that there must be a difference, I am in favor of the race to which I belong having the superior position." - Abraham Lincoln

there is no chinese/persian/greek/spanish history month, they are just integrated with "history" or "world history" in general.
I don't know about that... Asian Pacific heritage month is in May... Hispanic heritage month begins September 15th... And Arab heritage month is celebrated in IL during the month of November...

^^ i wasnt aware of that, thanks for letting me know.

im just sayin history should be history, there should be classes that specialize in certain cultural histories, and they should all be incorporated in general history classes, there shouldnt be the need to seperate cultures and designate them into specific months.

I agree, unfortunately that just isn't how it is in the class room, so this is needed, for now at least.

give me a break, these are hardly celebrated, and i agree with nav. we are still trying to assimilate black america by isolating them and separating black histroy from the rest?!?!?!
Ok, I see the point, this is what DeadPool was trying to say I guess.. But this isn't new, and I wouldn't say that Black History Month in specific was used to isolate black America, it was a way of incorporating it.. The intention and people behind this had the interest of black America in mind, Carter G. Woodson was an African American if most of you guys didn't know. He's the founder of Black History Month, so I don't see this as a conspiracy or anything among the masses, it's a progressive achievement.. There's virtually no black history at all in academia, and when there is it's always about slavery, as if that's the only legacy of black America. This month is a forward step around that, and it doesn't have much to do with assimilation, because we've been assimilated for years now. It's now time for recognition and truth digging, one month is not enough but what are we going to do? Get rid of it because it's too short? We need to come up with different and better solutions for the future first, instead of criticizing Black History Month and its intentions in the present.

i dont know anyone who celebrates hispanic or asian heritage month.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Hispanic_Heritage_Month
Hispanic Heritage Month is a period to recognize the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United States and to celebrate Hispanic heritage and culture. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988 on the approval of Public Law 100-402.

"September 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively." [1] Public Law 100-402 authorizes and requests the President to issue an annual proclamation designating September 15 through October 15, as "Hispanic Heritage Month."

October 12, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, also falls within this 30 day period.

everyone is celebrating their independence from spain, etc. and no one i know actually celebrates columbus day. and what about the rest of latin america? for example, Bolivia: August 6 - Independence from Spain in 1825. oh yeah, this was goin on at the time: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran_Contra_Affair

This is a month of remembrance, of history, of pain, struggle, glory, and triumph.. I'd like to start a thread with an Afrocentric point of view of the modern African diaspora movement, our history, and our future.. I'd like to start with history, reclaiming Egypt as this is but one of many efforts to suppress Africa's role in civilization, humanity, and over all history.

Who gives a fuck? History should be celebrated all year not just one fucking month where a race gets celebrated? Why dont we have Asian history month or latin history month? History is something that just doesnt need one month to celebrate the great things that Black people have done for society. There are also great things Asians, Latinos, Whites and other races did for society. Why is there only a black history month? Think about this shit it doesnt make any sense. Its like America set aside this day to make amends for something? Slavery maybe. The harsh treatment of Blacks during the early 1900's. I dont know it just strikes me as odd. So fuck one month of history. Lets make every month black, white, asian, latino and other race history. Lets make human history. Oh well just my Dollar and Some Change.

White History Month?! Are you serious, White History month is celebrated 12 months a year from the Last 221 Year of USA History!!!! I have nothing against whites in general, heck my uncle is white, my Lil Sister whom we adopted from my Uncle because he was too lazy to take care of her, is half white. I have more in common with the Lower and Middle Class Whites than some other people, but damn!

I don't know where you live or if you're even "white" but no one around these parts is celebrating white history. How does one celebrate something as intricate as their own whiteness?

"For 4 years now the Janjaweed have reined terror on Darfur in sudan, africa.

So far 400,000 people have been murdered, this included women and children. Women walk to get water in fear of being raped and beaten, prisoners are being tortured, 2.5 million people have had to evacuate their homes and live in camps, the evacuated homes looted and then burnt to the ground.

This is not a civil war, this is genocide, these people need help and yet our governments and the UN seem to want to do nothing. We need to spread awareness in any way possible. Please make your own Darfur video and post it as a video response to any of the videos on the channel of the youtube user NEDDOTCOM.
