^ Here's the short and simple answer:

Cops deal with life or death situations and the decisions that they make can have lifelong consequences for people and their families. For reasons like this, they should be held to a higher, more professional standard than others. In addition, this added power can easily put someone above the law, corrupting their actions in such a way that they no longer serve and protect. Combine that with the fact that people who tend to serve as police officers (no offense) are less-than-educated half racist hicks who often like the power that comes along with the job, and I understand why everyone makes a big deal when a police officer fucks up.

As long as you have some sort of power that civilians do not have, you should never defend any of your coworkers for raping somebody on the basis that we're making too big of a deal about it.

So I disagree - Just because someone's a cop means that they should NEVER make mistakes. I photocopy papers for a living, cops carry around guns and enforce laws. If I end up photocopying page 3 instead of page 5, I have yet to ruin anybody's life.
