What exactly does it say?

Can't play this file, or you can't get it to load with Windows Media Player.

If you can't get it to load, that means you have to get windows media player to be associated with the file type. You can do it in options or preferences whichever one for WMP. On the list of file types, make sure .avi has a check mark next to it.

Seriously though, all anyone needs to have on their computer for playing vids is WMP and VLC Player. Between those two, anything gets played.

VLC is nice for files I can't get to play in windows media player, though that rarely happens. The only type of files that I can't get to play on my WMP are .ogg files and .mkv files. Other than that, I'm updated on the codec pack, so WMP can play most file types. The only thing holding me back from using VLC all the time is the interface, no library like WMP and it's just a simple ass player really.....

I feel you - but dude is obviously not into updating on the codec packs.

Matter of fact, I've never had to update on codec packs, either. Why? Well, I already explained that.
