I dont agree with that. Why cant you have both? If low budget underground cats can have tight beats, why cant the mainstream?
im not sayin i hate beats im sayin i hate ppl who make it only on a good beat. if its a dope beat with dope lyrics then i love it but i dont like dope beats with shitty lyrics. but i could listen to a shitty beat with dope lyrics.

i guess imma an ol school lyric type a guy lol

DOWNLOADING/BOOTLEGGIN IS THE REASON
i agree and as bad as it is for the artists the labels have had it coming for a LOOOOOOONG time with their nazi tactics. a nice slap in the face for the record companies that have taken it to the consumers for years. sorry but i cant feel sorry. eventually it will weed out the artists whose primary goal is compensation. then its gonna back to the way it was. music for the sake of making music.

Whoever told you "bootlegging" and "downloading" is ruining album sales is misguided. Billions of dollars, literally, change hands for music PURCHASES every year. The majority of the music listening audience is very willing to BUY music if it's 1) reasonably priced, and 2) easily accessible. That is why internet SALES are booming right now.

The main reasons an album doesn't sell well is 1) shitty promotion, and/or 2) the music is CRAP. One "good" (I use that word loosely) single and a bunch of crappy filler songs is NOT worth the purchase. I've also noticed people aren't as interested in following an artists career like they used to be. A couple albums from rapper X and they're cool. They're ready for someone new.

I don't understand why the top bay area rappers are unable to sell but all those bullshit atlanta rappers are able to go gold and platinum offa pure bullshit. I'm not trying to hate on Atlanta cuz they got alot of talent down there but shit like the Franchise Boyz and those clowns who do that Walk it out song are able to sell hella copies of their bullshit but cats in the bay like Quinn and Mess can't and they drop solid albums year after year, it makes no sense to me

Because those cats support their own. They don't just talk about it, they actually do it. There is way too much hate towards each other among west coast rappers to ever have that kind of unity. When everyone stops acting like crabs in a bucket then maybe it'll change, just don't hold your breath waiting for it to happen.

I been saying that 4 yearz. The south got more hustle & unity then the other regions right now. Even if u are wack az long az u from the same backyard az them niggaz they'll fuck with your music alday long.

One thing thatz overlooked iz the strip club culture of the south. Alot of these wack azz songz u do here from the south go hard in the strip jointz out there. The strip club thing in Cali aint nothin compared 2 the south cuz majority ofniggaz in Cali aint into trickin off they paycheck like that. Southern catz go 2 strip jointz & try 2 out trick each other. D4L, Lil Jon etc go alot more harder in the strip clubz then they do in night clubs

Not at all.

the industry actually wants what the majority of people supports so they go by whats hot. And old school lyricists and gangsta shit isnt whats hot in this era its all about the club, bc where do all rappers do shows at other then arenas? THE CLUB so thats why all the square shit gets no play. if you cant dance to it tehn times out of ten its gonna lose.

No disrespect(im using these names as a example) but when is the last time you heard the club bumpin some Murs or Immortal Techinques?
thats another reason but then now i wonder why tch n9ne says the industry is punks, cuz every1 likes him thats heard him. but he finally it mainstream not to long ago so he can help tear out club shit

support their own meaning the fans or the artists themselves. I bought my fair share of bay area rap albums this year and many years past and i know i'm not the only one. I'm sure Atl rappers beef with eachother just as much if not more than bay area rappers do, rap is all about braggin and puffin your chest saying your the best.

Both, fans and artists are supportive. It's good that you support local music but doing so doesn't represent the majority in the bay. Why are you so sure southern rappers beef as much or more than the bay? That contradicts the very fact that they're supportive of each other. There is a lot of bragging and sticking your chest out in rap music but that doesn't mean rappers everywhere turn it into actual beef. The bay might get down like that but that's the bay. The south is not the bay area in a different location man.

Rap started in the east. The west took over because they brought something new to the table with gangsta rap, g-funk, mobb music, etc. The south snatched it because of their unity and support. A southern rap artist can go damn near platinum in the south alone. Let's see a bay area artist get even 1/10th of the way there in his back yard. Ain't happenin'.

As much as I like Tech no disrespect for what im about to say. Im not trying to offend anyone.

But Tech isnt gonna do it sad to say but its the truth. His last album didnt do no damage on teh charts or national level so he wont be doing no power moves no time soon maybe never( he good at touring though). Its all about power and numbers in the major league if you not doing them big numbers and have the certain music at the time, then The labels dont lsiten to what you have to say your basically just a peon

..

I was thinkin the other day about how Pharoahe Monch's album is finally coming out after 7 years... and I was like, "Fuck, 18 year old kids today were eleven when his last album dropped. And they were 3 when Organized Konfusion first came out." so... for us who've been around and following our favorite artists for 10+ years, it's just a new era. our "golden age" is different from what today's crowd knows.

There's some young talent out there, though... Lupe Fiasco's album was my favorite of the year... still waiting on the Saigon album. I'm not mad at the new crop of Southern shit... Jeezy, Lil Wayne... and check for this kid outta Fresno named Fashawn!!
