When the old PD Dennis Martinez was fired and Jazzy Jim was brought in about 4 or 5 months ago. It wasn't the station or the DJ's that was weak it was the program director.
This was written in january of 2005.

“The main difference is that crunk is slow and hyphy is faster,” says James Archer, music director of the Bay Area’s hip-hop Clear Channel station, KMEL. “With crunk, there’s more violence associated. Hyphy’s association is just partying.” As with any trend, Archer remains skeptical about hyphy's staying power. He says that although his listeners can’t get enough of the homegrown beats, "I think next year hyphy will be gone.”

james archer = jazzy jim head of wild 94.9

Yeah, I thought Jazzy Jim has been the PD for longer than 4 months.

I agree that they recognized that KMEL was shittin on em.
ratings and thats what matters to the stations.

jazzy jim: jazzy retired and took off to florida. the new guy was wack and everyone hated him. jazzy eventually came back.

I think 949 has always played dance music and/or and right now that is hyphy music. It just so happens that this music is home grown and they riding the bay/hyphy train all the way right now. I hear way more bay shit on 949 than on KMEL (besides the mix shows) right now. KMEL seems to be RnB'd out.

Yeah, but trip off this. Compare the lineup of the Block Party to 949's biggest concert this year.

94.9's demographic is Latin females 18 to 24 which is why they are so big in San Jose. KMEL's demographic is male 18 to 24 which is why the City and Oakland bump it mostly. Both stations are reaching their target audience.

I listen to the radio a lot in the car because I dont bootleg CDs (often) and I can't afford to go out every Tuesday and buy the new shit like Mr. Dummy-No-Bootlegs.
