what i normally do is ask for a deposit up front (50% non refundable)...

ill do a design...if they dont like it ill do a completely new one (saving the other to sell to someone else...lol)...

if they dont like the new one...we part ways...

but if theyve paid for it completely up front then ill offer a 50% refund or if they really want it to work out and i know itll be a repeat client then i may try another proof...

but for the most part the hassle isnt worth the money...

I agree with tosin, but I would also say get signed contracts with all your clients. It dont gotta be hella official, just clear and to the point. It might scare away some of the less serious business, depending on your circumstances you may or may not want that side effect, but when it comes down to it there is no arguing cuz shit is spelled out in black and white. Gotta be about your biz, if a client hates on that then they must be trying to waste your time.

how do you suggest getting contracts via the net w/ a client from say overseas or on the other side of the country? just a basic email agreement that you save saying they agree to the terms?

I hate working with people like that... but it is better than working with people who don't pay.... most of the time they just pick out little details they want changed or they just have really bad taste and want a look I am not feeling, so I will give it to them... but leave my credits off... cause I wasn't feeling their idea and I am not proud of the product even though they love it.

well I feel like the client should really check into what kinda work the person does and give them an idea of what they want....... if you see previous stuff they have done and like or don't like it, you should kinda know what your gonna get.....

I do a deposit of half up front.......

if they don't like the graphic I design, I feel like they should've provided more details & not just let me do it from skratch? if that makes sense......

alot of times, i'll switch it around, 1 more time if they are really really sure about it, but after that i'm done, I keep deposit.....

this money that's being paid for covers is not much money...... you'd pay 10 times what most designers on the net make if you went to a fullscale legit company, so you gotta realize that your going with someone freelance and work with it for what it is.... there is not much room for error at low prices like that

it's cool, but it's really the person coming to you's job, to make sure you know what they want, otherwise they are leaving it in your hands...... I did several thousand covers with name, title & pic only... and never had a problem.... then I had people describe the shit from top to bottom and not even like they own idea.... so it just depends on the person in my opinion

Alot of clients will ask for change after change just because they feel like they can, not because theyre dissatisfied. This is mainly when there's no fee being charged for a certain number of changes. You have to expect that with hip hop clients though, they have no idea what kind of deal theyre getting for these projects compared to a design firm.
I remember I had one client that'll ask me to change one thing, and when I did that, he'll e-mail me another long list of changes. I made those changes, then I got another long e-mail full of changes. Eventually, I just said fuck it and put the charge on him. After I charged for those changes, he accepted what was given.

what about the clients that ask for change, then another change, then another change, and then say "gimme the first one, I like that one the best"

I have this client that has done that to me everytime he got a design from me, I finally just told him forget it, cuz it wasn't worth the money.... d00d used to stress me out... lol

ive never really had that happen...but ive had clients...especially for concert flyers...continue to change and add opening acts...

now that shit is annoying...

and why do clients think you are by your comp 24/7 for their late ass changes?

promoters are the worst and they pay least. I really dont like doin flyers, always changes, always a rush. but fuck it, i like the money, i figure the $150 i charge for the flyer design is my next pair of jordans, so i bang it out.

what i do hate is when some new booty rapper wants only a flyer design to promote some album that'll never come out. and they want it to be as dope as a cd cover. i dont spend nearly as much time on a flyer as i would on a cover, so i'll usually turn it down.

my rule for cover refunds is 'fuck no'. its only happenned twice, but i just kept the deposit, one was a 4panel the other a 2panel.

as for changes, i make sure my clients are specific in the begining. i let them know I'll do 2 revisions but its always based on the original concept. a new theme is a new cover = whole new charge. usually everybodys happy, but some just like to be picky.

for some reason the customers i get the most drama from are the gospel church people. bangers, pimps, hustlers easy to deal with and usually pretty humble & respectful. than i'll get some gospel rapper complianing bout shit we already agreed on, hating on all my other clients, tryin to be funny with money, or the worst one - sayin '3rd Eye' has somthin to satan and not want my logo in the cover lol.

well i feel better after venting, time to twist one and get back to work.
