Whats the differance between an E.P. and an L.P?

I know that an E.P. is shorter correct?
But what data constitutes whether your record is an E.P. or L.P?
*I'm talking currently too by the way, like for a cd, because I know those terms were also used back when it was all Vinyl.....

A long play album is a music album that is considered a whole, often nearing an hour in total length. Compare EP, which is longer than a single but shorter than an LP.
