lets just say just for promoting in Northern Cali...

personally... I think no less then $2000

500 promo cd's (or for around same price) 1000 cassette promos
1000 posters
1000 stickers
5000 flyers

and thats a low ball figure... maybe enough for like a fraction of the bay.

That a problem, or a expense a lot of artist don't think about and hurt their sales.

But I think that money you spend... might dent you in the begining... but be worth it when the cd drops and you get your money back

but I want ya'll opinon

Depends on how many records you want to sell...

Clearly you're not going to sell many if know one knows you've got a record out.
Figure that maybe 10% of people you let hear your music on the streets and maybe 3% on the web will result in a sales. Posters look nice, but they don't let the public know what you sound like. I'd go with more snippet cds. Have your street team standing on the sidewalk by any local schools or hangouts with a boombox and a walkman letting people hear your material.

The public has wised up to the crap in the market place and won't take a chance on someone they haven't heard. If you've got hot product and let people hear it, you will sell.

yea I agree with you

posters, and flyers are nice in all... but I think Posters and Flyers bennifit more to artist with a name already... so really there just letting there fans, and people know there about to come out with a new album

while snippets... help the artist, who no one knows of...

I think all artist should also have a website... so at the least, if someone gets there flyer can download a few mp3's of them from the site.

^ don't u have listening booths in stores? I constantly hear people buying albums then sayin how they were shit. Why not just listen to it in the store first and then decide.

I know we're talking about out the trunk style here tho.

FILA nah not even out the trunk...

i'm talking about promoting you album... so people go to the store and buy it...

not all places have listening stations, and there's only so many cd's that can be on the station... so might not want to depend on just that... but thats a plus if you want to pay for that...

no one is giving figures $$$

i also agree that the snippets help a new artist more. maybe some flyers or stickers would be coo, but snippets can really get people into your music.

cause i've become fans of alotta artists that i got snippets of.

like messy marv, after i got one of his snippet cd's i bought his album, and started buyin all his old cd's as well.

That's right and no matter what, the music game is not free.
Obviously the bigger your vision, the bigger the expenses and sacrafices.

Posters, flyers, etc, make very little impact for unknown artists. While it can be somewhat helpful, you can't rely on that stuff for exposure. Forget cassette snippets too. There's a reason you can go into any music store and damn near their entire inventory is on compact-disc. Get yourself a whole lot of snippet cds to hand out and some vinyl for these dj's. And don't forget to factor in the payola.

Honestly, $2000 is nothing. That money would be better spent securing investors who can put together a real budget. Or atleast enough so it's not a complete waste.

Buy a 7x duplicator. high speed, high quality. 800
Buy 4000 CD's. 1200
Make and burn snippets.
Buy 4000 CD paper sleves 70
Buy 5000 fliers that fit into the sleeves: 300

Pass out in front of record stores only. Those are the people that buy.

total cost
less than $2400

great start

Most importantly... the duplicator is now something you own. You can use it over and over.... and for practically nothing.

thats a great idea gamewarden....we were thinking along the same lines--do u have a hook up on where 2 pick them duplicators?

-we usually press up over 15k flyers and pass them out @ events like carshows and records shops.

-we dont press up many posters because in most cities it is illegal to post them on the streets....

-stickers are a great promo tool as well if you get a dedicated following that will post them for ya....

-you should also think about at least one ad in a local magazine.
