For a long time I always thought of a "mixtape" as something where a dude is rapping over industry jacked beats. Nowadays I'm seeing that term thrown around there all the time, and I listen to it and all of the beats are original. So I'm thinking why the hell is the guy calling it a mixtape and not just his album???

What's the deal here, somebody fill me in please.

Maybe they are tracks that didnt make the album cut. Or sometimes someone might be signed with a label and they might be on the shelf, or have problems with the label so they just drop somethin original to keep they name buzzin in tha streets

A MIXTAPE IS ANY COMBINATION OF INSTRUMENTAL FREESTYLES, ALBUM CUTS, UNRELEASED STUDIO TRACKS, WHATEVER IT IS... IT IS CALLED A MIXTAPE BECAUSE IT IS A **STREET RELEASE** OF MATERIAL, ALSO THERE IS USUALLY A DJ INVOLVED AND REGARDLESS OF WHAT KIND OF TRACK THE DJ IS PLAYING, IT IS PART OF HIS MIXSHOW (THE MIXTAPE IS LIKE A RECORDING OF THE DJS SHOW) THATS WHY THERE IS A DJ AND AN ARTIST, THE DJS PERFORMANCE OF THE MIX IS HALF THE MIXTAPE.

Mixtapes are a promotional tool by a artist for the streets and in some cases to help a DJ get some recognition and money in they pocket at the same time.

most of the original tracks are put on mixtape due to legal reason like a sample couldnt be cleared or the artist didnt get permission/pay the producer for his beat or that types of shit. im a artist myself and my visions of a mixtape is still the traditional uncut, unrehearsed freestyle showcase over a industry beat with some exclusive unreleased songs from a up coming project or tracks that didnt make a past project . now days artist done changed the whole mixtape game by totally redoing they own complete song including verses/chorus all over a mainstream beat.

whats the difference if they throw a song with an uncleared sample on a mixtape or a legitimate release? The shit is still getting released and the artist is still makiing money off someones music without thier consent...

the whole "mixtape" thing is gettin played out...original mixtapes were all about tha DJ...now every rapper makes a mixtape & alot without even a dj. it used to be if a DJ asked you to be on his tape then you were bubblin...now rappers go & pay a DJ, if that, to drop a mixtape with them...weak!

They not getting royalties or plaques for a mixtape. Remember if you have a retail album legally released with barcode you can eat off that mofo everytime it sells long as you own the rights to it.

Word, shit doesn't even have any mixing going on between the tracks and shit, it is just a bunch of tracks on a cd with no DJ tricks. Them shits should be called compilations, or "promotional items" really.
