Other than bay shit Ive been bumpin a lot of alternative rock: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Modest Mouse, Green Day, JET, Maroon 5.
Im pretty much fed up with the mainstream rap scene. All the songs from down south sound the same and the lyrics are mediocre, I only like a couple southern artists right now and Im really dissapointed that this type of music is dominating the radio. Most of the people on the East Coast are either tryin to sound like the South or 50 Cent, Im not really into that kinda repetitive and unoriginal shit so I stick to Nas when it comes to NY rappers. I like Twista and some of the midwest boyz but for real the bay is the best hip hop region right now in the US and I aint just sayin that to be biased.
Now exuse me while I go pop in American Idiot and get stupid to some alternative in my whip...

As far as mainstream goes,Ludacris is coo wit me. I like Young Jeezy even though he on his way up that mainstream ladder. Other than those cats,I'm not really feelin' the mainstream cats. Hearing the same songs in the club that you do on the radio and vice versa..is just sickening! " I need a diiiiiiiiime!" "Who? Mike Jones..Who? Mike Jones..Who?" Shut up nigga!

There is difference between Mainstream and underground. But I'm sure you understood the original question that was asked. There is a difference between Nelly and Turf Talk! For ALOT of artists it's about $$..so they do what they gotta do. I do understand what you are saying though. Just as quick as you may be to slump some Bow Wow in your car..you may have just taken out a Jacka cd. So I am pretty sure you like some non-mainstream artists as much as you do mainstream cats.
