It used to be I'd get 'em based on features and production, but then we started gettin' weak comps even with strong rappers on them. I'm real critical so it's hard for me to go on features anymore. I'm really into hearing snippets first. If you're not confident enough in the music to put snippets up then maybe you shouldn't put the comp out.

I buy comps based on:
Who produced it
What label put it out
Who is featured on it.

But most of all, the very most critical point is:
Is the comp pieced together with recycled tracks?

A real comp in my opinion should be a complete project, it has to flow through from beginning to end. It can't just be thrown together, it has to be well thought out. I really think Compilations should be made up of exclusive tracks that are not found on any other album. If it's not exclusive it's more like a best of CD, and I don't go for those.

I feel you on that. I'm gonna be putting one together and like you said its gonna be a complete project. I'm gonna handle all the production on it for the most part and make sure that everything flows really smooth for it. I want to hand pick the beats for the artists that will compliment them the best and just make some good music. I just dropped about a g on shirts and hats for promo items so things are starting to move forward. I appreciate all of the feedback on this thread. Peace

Stupidity mainly.

I bought 40 or 50 of the damn things, and 30 or 40 have the same damn tunes with different names.

I could name you a long list of corny comps with weak covers and sorry line ups. I've seen more recycled cuts than I've used recycled toilet-paper.

Now all I check for is the date on it, before 97 or 98 cats had some integrity and took some pride in putting out a solid album.

Since then only City On The Hush, Lock Down, anything from MillionDollar Dream and the Bart 2 the 91 Siccness comp been worth it, and not a lot else.......

Think back to 17 Reasons, 18 Wit A Bullet, Boss Ballin and those 4080 comps, shit was actually tight then.

Now it's like buying a load of tracks that no cat would ever put on their album or tracks that have been on more albums than San Quinn.

And let me say, I would buy any comp if Quinn was on it. That's maybe why I keep swoopin so many sorry comps....

Would you buy a compilation that you've never heard based off of the artists or producers or would you first want to hear snippets of the tracks.
Ignore the PM I sent you, I already have your address.... must have been trippin. I overlooked your name on the mail-out list.

A compilation in the new sense ofthe word can get played out. I thinkthere is a problem if there are a bunch of features and every song has 3 or 4 people on it.

Compilations: Do you consider NWA's first album a compilation?

The purpose of a compilation (for our label) is two fold. One to give exposure to new artists, and to gain momentum for solo projects. Now, we will put out more of these "comps" but it wont be watered down bullshit. Everything is and will be on point with each song.

To get a free CD-R hit me on the PM/email or post on the thread titled: "PaperTrail givin away free music. Respond & get served. This how it should be done "

if it has the rappers that are consistantly tight on every verse for example: cougnut, san quinn, e-40, taydatay. some rappers won't give their best effort or will use a lot of lyrics that they have used before. production is huge though.
