I was talking to a waiter, and he told me that different kinds of people tip differently and that he (as well as other waitstaff) can pretty much tell ahead of time what kind of tip they are going to get out of you. I just think that's fascinating. He said it also depends on their race, too.

The best tippers, he said? (1) A whole bunch of white 20 to 30-something girls out for ladies night out. (2) Other waitstaff.

The worst tippers, he said? (1) Black folk, in general. (2) Jews. *Hey man, I'm just sayin'.

As for me personally, when I got it (and the service is good), I really lay some cash down. But since living over here, I just haven't been able to tip as well as I normally would like... when I can get decent service, that is. (Does it seem like service in general is getting worse to you?)

What about you?
Anybody here ever waited tables and can corroborate any of this?

I waited tables very briefly, so I couldnt say yes or no to any of the above. My philosophy was if you liked my service, anything would be appriciated but its not how I make my money.

One thing that gets on my nerves is employees who think they should be tipped for just doing their job.
Ex. I was at the Cold Stone ice cream parlor with Humbold High one night and on top of the fact that the service looked just horrible, the manager( i guess thats what that lil 19 y/o filipina was) hollared out to the customers "ok people dont forget to tip us!" Then they went into some gay lil diddty about tipping (like the ommpa loompas only to the tune of zippity-do-da) thats when I threw my hands up and walked out on them bitches.
Restaurants I can understand
Hotels depending on who in the staff again I can understand
delievery guy.. yea him too...

but everyone else can just suck a dick.... you dont tip the guy at mcdonalds for handing you a bag
you dont tip the grocer
you dont tip the jerk off at radio shack for selling you a phone...
video store clerks etc....
just my opinion though

Up until last week I worked in the restaurant biz for 6 years. We never got too many black people in there so I can't relate. Butttttt, paisas are THE FUCKIN WORST tippers on the planet. I'm not sayin fellow Mexicans in general, but the ones that are from the "mother land" will drop 4 bucks on an $80 bill if you're lucky even after great service, yeah should be Paisas / Asians lol. Being a guy that did pretty well, I gotta say that when you get woman in a group of 4+ or even in a party of like 30, you will make cash. Same with guys, you act cool and supply the liqour to the dudes, and they leave a pile of cash afterwards. Thank god for gratuities. And don't think waiters won't remember who tips well and who doesn't, shit if your tips suck, your ass is on the lowest priority.

Yeah same thing,,,IF the service iz good. IF not jus a dollar a person who Im with. My family makes fun of me how I tip......jus cause I dont have THAT much money jus to fuckin give away. Hate to be mean but they have to earn it.

I tip very well if the service is worth it. I used to worked at a coffee shop in Berkeley, and depended on tips to buy food. Always had a big smile and a warm greeting. It is also my experience that for the most part paisanos are not the best tippers.

My dad always told me to take whatever the tax is, multiply it by 2, and there is the tip. My husband (a black man) is the worst tipper in the world. We always argue over the tip because he usually thinks I am givin up too much and I think he is not leavin enough.

Yeah telling a customer about their crappy tip is way out of line even though it sucks. I worked with alot of those shit ass servers that will put in 70% effort and would complain about not makin money. Shit near the end of the week walkin out with $175 after 4 or five hours meant you busted ass. You gotta hustle.

My Grandma supported 8 kids working double shifts as a waitress (and did ironing on the side) so I was raised to treat the waitstaff, usher, hostess, bellboy, beautician, cabdriver, etc. very well.. I am all about rewarding good service- I'll fill out the comment card and I've gone as far as e-mail a Corporate office or two (once for horrendous service- once for outstanding service) ..but if I take my boys out to dinner and we get shit service-- believe that I will speak to someone about it. I can spend my money anywhere and if customer service is your job you better be about it- if dinner runs $45-$50.. I'm leaving $12-$15 for good service.. when I get my nails and toes done for $45 I always tip $15-- its funny how they remember me everytime I come in, I never have to wait and they'll handpaint flowers on my toes for nothin'.... :)

Props to those in the Customer Service field.... its tough work.

i tip good except when they blatantly fuck their own tip off.....

ive been banned from one of my favorite resturants for leaving ZERO tip...... the fucking prick didnt fill my water one time or ask hows it going and gets pissed cuz i dont tip em..... i was real close to catching an assault charge

i'll tip if i got the money and if the service is good , i remmber i went to denny's hella late but it was full there my boy asks "whats chicken fried steak , is it chicken or steak" the lady gives him some shit and doesnt even tell him , i ended up tellin him , bitch......

I usually tip thick, because I fuck with the wait staff consistantly... I'm rude as hell. And funny as hell. So if they put up with it, big tip... if they freak out during it and I feel I didn't push 'em that hard... regular tip.

If they threaten to kick me out, penny and lint.
