What is the Most Common Learning Disability Among Children?

Is it dyslexia? Is it ADD/ADHD? Is it visual processing disorders? Is it auditory processing disorders? Is it autism?

The answer is none of these. The biggest learning disability among children in our education system is parents. The apple does not fall far from the tree. I don't see why it is so difficult for parents to interact and take an interest with their kids. Why can't parents teach their kids simple things like letters and letter sounds, numbers, shapes, colors, days of the week, etc.? My two and a half year old cousin knows most of these things already. How come your 7 or 8 year old child doesn't know these things? How come you can't help your child with their homework? Is first grade material too academically challenging?

I do realize that some kids have REAL learning disabilities, but you know what? Their parents usually take an interest in their kids education.

I believe parents should discipline kids, but what if the child has a chemical inbalance? Beat the fool with a hot wheel track until he can add 1+0? Do the companies misdiagnose (on accident AND pupose)? Yes. Do they want your money? Yes. Can this lead to further problems down the road? Some kids NEED a belt in order to settle down and focus. Other kids may need a talk, but what about those who are basically "loose" in the head?

I was never diagnosed with ADD.

I was incredibly bright in elementary school, though I was hard to keep focused. Teachers said I was just chatty and easily distracted. I lacked discipline. Both of my parents are well educated, good people but I just couldn't sit still. I would walk away from class rooms because I felt like it. I'd suddenly realize that someone was talking to me and I had no idea about what. I'd just been standing there listening and then I'd drifted off to think about something else while they spoke.

In Middle school I was suddenly deemed lazy, because I was so bright but didn't accomplish much. I had so much potential but I was too lazy to stay focused. I couldn't do anything with out side tracking, or getting distracted. I'd walk away from projects, even when I was under pressure, and I'd forget about a test and draw on the borders of the paper.

High school was worse. I was tragic. Teachers knew I was smart, but thought I was lazy and scatter brained. I barely passed. I knew the majority of the shit, but I couldn't do home work. I became so distracted by random things at home that by the time I sat down to do my work it was time for bed. And if I made myself sit down with it, I'd get so frustrated that I couldn't stay focused that I'd give up. The stuff I wasn't interested in I drifted away from. But I actually *tried* to do well. I'd force myself to stare at the teacher and I swear to you that I didn't understand a word she said. Next thing I knew, I was somewhere else. Anything I handed in was notorious for having more drawings on it than answers. I would stare at the paragraphs during history class, and I would try to memorize shit. But it was like another language. And then I didn't remember any of it. The subjects I liked hurt the worst because I was genuinely into it, but I couldn't do anything at home.

I don't know if I had a learning disability, or what. My folks don't believe in ADD, so I was treated like a scatter brained, procrastinating kid. I'm still incapable of remaining focused for long periods of time. Maybe I was lazy and selfish, and that was it. But there were literally times when I would cry because I was trying to read something but my brain would go somewhere else, and I had to learn the material.

It's not always laziness, which was my point. I might have suffered from a learning disability. Why do so many people claim to have ADD compared to the small handful of people who probably do have it? How do they even diagnose it?
