Feel free to add on......I'm asking if you had to choose one quality that draws you in to a rapper, what would it be? Like what is the best characteristic that your favorite rapper has? Or better yet, what is the most important quality needed for a rapper to be successful? I would love to say lyrics, but I guess it's all about "Swag" and image.

Be a credible figure before music for he would always have shit to say if you have no story you make up lies and people could tell you trying to hard or your fake. You can tell the rappers who really sold dope or you can hear it in a rappers voice that he could probably beat the dog shit out of you or how a pimp rapper spit game if he really breaking a bitch! For instance the Jacka he really study Islam so when he rap about it real muslims or believers in general know what he's talking about . You need to walk it to talk it also being on the road if you ain't really real you might get broke your pockets are your nose because street dudes can tell. The realness will come out in the shows same way you been rocking on your block you will be rocking on stage same way you hit the clubs and our reckonized in the streets your style will be universal game reckonize game.

I think part of the problem is fans tho. We need to start looking at rap like we are watching a movie. The shit is fictional, it's telling a story. The rappers who really do what they rap about don't last very long. Maybe they used to sell drugs or play wit pistols, but the ones that are serious about making it in the hiphop world aren't doing that anymore. Even if they are still rapping about it. Taking every lyric as literal is naive.

An artist just needs to be able to make good/great music period. Hot music trumps everything. You can have everything on your list and go nowhere if the music aint on par. But if your music is hot you dnt need any of the other stuff...it'll come over time anyway. Nothing else matters to me if you cant make good music.

Edit: I cant stand how the word swagger has been abused. Fuck swagger...swagger aint gon make me listen to yo wack song.

to me the main thing lacking is rappers with flows, everybody seems to have the impression that rapping hella basic and making simple songs is the way to go and is why rap is at its lowest point.

I feel what you saying, but saying "fuck swagger" doesn't change the fact that fans and rappers buy into that shit. Niggas with no talent are getting by just by running around saying they got swag n shit.......

That all depends on what you consider "getting by". Cuz if you look at soundscan as I do on a daily basis you'll see that all these swag rappers are FLOPPIN hard! Men lie woman lie number dnt. If a rappers goal is to just be on tv but be broke and front like they got money, then by all means the "Swag" rappers are winnin. But if its based on sales, shows. endorsements, publishing, etc.. which it should be these swag rappers are losing bad. Music isn't at an all time low for nothing. The "swagg" generation is the worst performing and income generating generation in rap history.

Everything you mentioned except battle rapping makes an artist. You can be the best battle rapper and not know how to make a song

honesty. most of these rappers cant be honest wit they self, let alone everybody else. if you aint solid before u picked up the mic im not tryna hear nothin u gotta say.
If you talking about keeping it real and rapping about shit they doing. I think the bay is probably the only place cats is rapping bout shit they doing. Cats like jay-z creative vision when he came out was based on cat he knew. Jay-z never was no big ass dope boy or no street cat. Same goes for rick ross and lil wayne. When hip-hop first started everybody was rapping about shit they didn't have but everything they wanted. It was rhyme and reason threw there own vision

I agree with this. That's why every time u look up there is another Bay Area rapper in jail. Keeping it real is overrated. That doesn't mean you gotta turn hollywood or forget about where u came from. BUT YOU CAN'T DO WHAT YOU USED TO DO if you tryna make it in this game.

for me in no order its

Delivery: how they spit their bars plus their voice, does it sound good on wax

Beat: does the producer and artist find the right sound(refer to khayree's previous work)

Word play/lyrics: does what they say have meaning??????

Credibility: is these dudes being real??? fuck gimmicks (the bay flooded w/that, refer to hyphy.........in the 90's you could tell that each artist had a distinct sound from region to region in the bay

ill add more later
