Songs like Freaks of The Industry by Digital Underground has stood the test of time in this rap world where a good song only lasts a month or so. What is the element in a song that makes it seem so timeless ? Is it the beat ? The lyrics ? The content ? The artist ?

to me a beat that is real catchy that won't get too annoying like for me camron's oh boy beat was dope but after a while that 'boy boy boy' high pitch chipmunk shit got annoying

that i got 5 on it beat classic first of its nature to me -although i'm a young in still 21 so i may be wrong - but also the hook has to be somethin that people can sing along to or can be easily followed by listeners or folks at the club

also the concept has to be something first of its kind as well although concepts nowadays are redundant

bunch of smoke songs out there but to give it a twist and use it from the point of view of having 5 on it - 'like nyquil i drop fever' i can never play that line out

basically a concept that is original and appealing - tupac baby don't cry classic example

i don't see any songs on the radio now making it classic status same ol concepts

The lyrics. If you can relate to it, you'll be listening to it for a long time.
this is why it is easier for a rock or really any other kind of song other than rap to last much longer. rap is really the only music type that embraces trends. if you can get away from trends and be yourself, your music can last much longer.
