What do yall mean when you say, "It sounds too east coast"??

That's a generalization that needs to be broken down a bit more.
The Jack Artist had a bunch of samples, but the samples he uses all mostly have a west coast vibe, on some laid back shit.
West coast IS more synth based (especially now) but you can't tell me the sample-based production of Dr Dre (earlier), DJ Unknown, DJ Quik (earlier), Sir Jinx and many others sounded "east coast"
STRATEGY
The Jacka don't sound eastcoast and neither does Yuk but I have heard people refer to other rappers and say they sound Eastcoast but i can't think of anygood examples. I think the stereotypical EastCoast rappers that people use as a point of reference are the battle rappers like Jae Mills and cats like that.
I don't think people are reffering to Jacka's rhyme style as much as they are the production that he's spitting over...
When people think of West Coast production, usually the first thing you think of is that funk sound, synth-driven, heavy basslines, that swing in the drums...
When you think of East Coast production, you usually think of an old jazz or soul sample, and more recently, pitched up vocals...usually more dark and grimey sounding.
Rob-Lo's production does have an East Coast feel to it...but whether or not its 'too' East Coast is just an opinion.

Jacka and ROb Los sound does have a hint of east coast influence to it no doubt on alot of tracks but it still has a bay vibe at the same time, I say if its dope its dope. I like the fact that rappers like Quinn and Jacka aren't on the same vibe as everyone else. When people from around the country have a chance to get up on all bay shit I bet you more cats will be feeling people Like Jack and Quinn because they have great mic skills with clean original production that unfourtunatly I'm not seeing from the bay much latley. Just because something is sample driven doesn't mean it doesn't have a bay area feel to it, just listen to Sean Ts beats, heavily sample drivin but still has that west coast feel to it.
Good thread Doc..my brother Alkohol has heard that shit all his life and he's born n rasied in Frisco. The nigga loves and lives the bay area life from a youngsta to a grown man. We grew up on everyone from Ice T to Rakim, Too short to Kool G, Ice Cube to Big Daddy Cane, e40 to nas, Spice to Meth, snoop to Jayz and so forth..I mean he got alil bit of everybody in him...niggas use to be like you sound like you from new york or some shit..but his flow was really just different than the rest. Not better..just different..we listen to everybody. Niggas was 8 years old going to buying records from bobby g'z. But what cats don't understand is this nigga alkey has his own flow..he spits bay area period cuz that's were we from..and yes what he grew up on influenced his delivery but we grew up on everything in hiphop since the 80's.

East Coast beats have that “boom bap” sound. Think of Mobb Deep’s older stuff or Illmatic. Better yet think of production from the Rza or DJ Premier, it has that raw, grimey sound to it. Biggie was one of the first East Coast artist to come out with more West Coast soundin stuff, that’s why everyone loved him and thought he was the greatest. But it’s not even like that anymore because artist use producers from everywhere and everybody samples. As far as the flow goes, East Coast artist have a quick flow. I’m not talking about no speed rappin. I mean their rhyme comes quicker. East Coast rappers may rhyme on every beat, where West Coast rappers may rhyme on every other beat. Crooked I has an East Coast type flow. You could hear a little East Coast influence in Jacka’s music and Clyde Carson lived in NY for a while that’s why he has some East Coast influence. It’s not to say one region is better then the other, every region has their own sound. Just like you could tell when a rappers is from the South. You could even tell the difference between Bay soundin and LA soundin. I think you could hear LA influence in Turf Talk’s flow.
theres a difference in sampling style, but not sampling itself. the west coast has always sampled.
