Niners RB Gore expected to play, but TE Davis out
By GREG BEACHAM, AP Sports Writer
September 25, 2006

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -- The San Francisco 49ers got good news about running back Frank Gore and confirmed bad news about tight end Vernon Davis on Monday.

Gore is expected to be in the 49ers' lineup at Kansas City on Sunday despite bruised ribs that sidelined him in the third quarter of their loss to Philadelphia. Davis, the sixth overall pick in the draft, will be out four weeks with a broken bone in his right leg.

The 49ers' two young offensive stars were hurt on the same play last Sunday in their 38-24 loss to the Eagles.

Gore, who rushed for 266 yards and three touchdowns in the 49ers' first three games, was hurt while trying to stretch over the goal line in the third quarter. He fumbled in the process, and defensive lineman Mike Patterson returned it 98 yards for a score.

The 49ers initially said Gore strained an abdominal muscle, but changed the diagnosis to bruised ribs Monday afternoon.

"I'll be on the field," Gore said. "I'm kind of sore, but I'll be all right."

Improbably, Davis was hurt trying to chase down Patterson.

Leaning on crutches in the 49ers' locker room Monday, Davis lamented the first major injury of his football career. He never had more than a bruised shoulder in college at Maryland.

"These ain't me right here," Davis said, indicating his crutches. "I try to work so hard to prevent something like this. ... I still think I'm invincible. This can't stop me. I'm just going to keep working hard in the weight room and hit the playbook."

Davis scored the first time he touched the ball in a regular-season game, but has just five catches for 37 yards and that one touchdown this season -- all coming in the season opener at Arizona. He failed to make a catch against St. Louis or Philadelphia in the last two weeks, missing two catchable balls when he attempted acrobatic one-handed grabs.

Eric Johnson, who had 92 catches in 2004 but missed last season with a foot injury, will start in Davis' place. Though Johnson is working on his chemistry with quarterback Alex Smith in their first three games together, the veteran tight end caught seven passes for 87 yards against the Eagles, culminating in a 15-yard TD catch with 6 seconds to play.

"I felt like we really had a good connection," Johnson said. "He was fitting some balls in tight to me, and I had a really good sense of what he was trying to do out there."

Rookie tight end Delanie Walker, who showed promise in the preseason, will return to practice this week after missing the first three games with a right shoulder injury.

Gore, who leads the 49ers with 14 receptions, went to a hospital after the game for X-rays, that came up negative. The second-year pro's frustration showed after he watched film of his mistake.

"I'm very upset," said Gore, who rushed 16 times for 52 yards. "I just have to come back to work hard in practice and do my best against Kansas City. It was real upsetting that I couldn't finish, and I also fumbled again in a critical situation and hurt the team."

Rookie running back Michael Robinson will also get significant playing time for the 49ers after scoring two touchdowns against the Eagles. Coach Mike Nolan said Robinson might replace Gore as the 49ers' short-yardage back after Gore's second straight game with a goal-line fumble.

"Whatever Coach Nolan wants to do, I'm fine with it," Gore said.

The injuries tempered another strong performance by Smith, who went 27-of-46 for 293 yards and one touchdown. Smith hasn't thrown an interception in his three starts, and he even rushed for 39 yards against the Eagles -- including a 22-yard scamper for a first down.

Though the 49ers are 1-2 for the second straight year under Nolan, the players' attitudes are markedly changed, Smith said.

"There were times last year when I was guessing too much instead of playing the play and reacting to it," Smith said. "It comes from just actually playing and reacting to things. I can just take off and do things now. There were times last year when you kind of doubted yourself."

I still think i can get traded. Once this happens. I can finally go out and play real hard, but for now im going to continue acting like a panzy ass vaginal ho."

well, aaron brooks isnt all that bad...you gotta remember hes coming from like 4 years in new orleans (who hasnt been exactly the greatest NFC team...) and now hes playing with the raiders (worst team in the league)

heres a few numbers....

2002 (Saints went 9-7...wins over Pittsburgh, 2 over Tampa Bay, and Baltimore....not bad AND he was starting over Delhomme)
ATT COMP % YDS YDS/ATT TD INT RATING
Aaron Brooks 528 283 53.6 3572 6.8 27 15

2003 (8-8)
Aaron Brooks 518 306 59.1 3546 6.8 24 8 88.8

2004 (8-8)
Aaron Brooks 542 309 57.0 3810 7.0 21 16 79.5

2005 (3-13 played the whole season on the road)
Aaron Brooks 431 240 55.7 2882 6.7 13 17 70.0

i aint even gonna bother posting this seasons stats for him cuz most of the numbers are probably negative......i gotta give it up to the saints though, that was a tough game they played last night, they have done a lot of restructuring and they look VERY tough to beat...anyway to get back on point, those numbers arent that bad...

That same year they beat Chicago, Green Bay, and Frisco. They beat Tampa Bay twice that year and that's when Tampa won the SuperBowl with Sapp and Keyshawn. Brooks hurt his shoulder that year and the Saints faded. It wasn't like the Saints defense was playing like they were playing last night. And in 2003 or 2004, the Saints had one of the worst defenses (statistically) in the history of the NFL. And they still managed to go 8-8.

Niners aint gonna steal shit!

ya boy Smith is in for a rude awakening come Sunday.

Chiefs 27
Niners 0

I don't know where you get the idea that The Chefs are able to put up 27 points.

So far this season, The Chefs have put up a whopping 16 points ! Marvelous job team !

Lets have a closer look and see where our teams stand...

Total Offensive Plays

Chefs - 125 ( Boy that Defense is on the field an awful lot ! :dead: )

49ers - 191

Offensive Yards Per Game

Chefs - 282.5

49ers - 381.7

Yards Per Play

Chefs - 4.5 ( Wouldn't be bad if it was rushing...:dead: )

49ers - 6.0

Passing Yards Per Game

Chefs - 153.5

49ers - 262.7

Sacks Allowed

Chefs in 2 games - 8 ( Boy, you guys sure missin Willie now huh...? )

49ers in 3 games - 4

One bright spot for The Chefs is that you have a pretty good Time Of Possesion...at 30:04...too bad for you guys you weren't able to do jack shit when you guys did have the ball...:dead:

Now tell me where you get off thinking The Chefs stand a chance against my Niners ?

I think The Raiders have a better chance of getting their first win than you guys do...:dead:

This game, like all games this year, will boil down to the 49ers making or not making mistakes. They don't have enough experience collectively to withstand turnovers, and that was shown last week. The same thing will happen this week in KC if they turn it over or commit penalties. Granted, Philly is clearly a better team than KC is, but that won't make a bit of difference if they put themselves down early or blow chances to score by turning it over.

I think the Niners will have learned from last week's mistakes and will pull this one out 21-17.
