You don't need to buy any books... I started out with a program called Cool Page Pro. It's a WSIWYG program meaning you drag and drop images, text and so forth. I recomend it for newbs because you learn placement and concepts behind web design.

I took a few programming courses in school for VB and C which helped me learn how to read coding which eventually helped me learn html and php. Now if you want to start coding on your own, bust out notepad and head over to xpresshtml.net . They have every script you would need to start a page hand coded. You can pretty much cut and paste from there site, edit then save. It's great for "newbs" or anyone who needs a quick reference.

Myself I use notepad and have developed a coded template that I can use for pretty much any website with graphical adjustments of course. After time you'll find that it's easy to code shit yourself...

i started off the hardway, just fuckin with notepad.. and your basic html codes.. then fuckin with php scripts and seeing what the functions were then i started fuckin with mysql.. real basic tho.. im not a pro or anything but notepad is handy as fuck.. i never really fucked with dreamweaver because i feel sloppy and lazy on it, but i use it from time to time to check out the lines on the php coding to see where the errors are at. Web design is pretty easy, its just the way you learn it that could make it harder or easier.
