You just use your broadband connection as a phone line instead of using a traditional telephone company. Most of the time you have free long distance within your country and to some others, and cheaper rates to all the others.

VoIP is decent, Vonage is ok. Don't ever go with packet8, and don't expect 911 service. Always keep a actual landline for when power/internet is down. VoIP provider list: http://www.voip-list.com/

and if you want to do some extensive(and cluttered) reading: http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/
What's wrong with packet 8? that's the service I use and it's been working great.

For one, their customer service sucks. If you call them(do they even still have a publicly available customer service # anymore? lol), they'll tell you for the residential unlimited plan "really does mean unlimited, no matter how many minutes you use." The problem with that is, it's a f'ing lie. If you use your voip too much they'll give you the "convienence" of upgrading your package(i.e. more money) without your permission. They'll upgrade your "residential unlimited plan"(as we all know unlimited in advertising means what the company deems is reasonable, not actually unlimited. contrary to what the workers said) to a business plan.

Even though it's cheap, that's more than enough reason for me to say don't ever go with packet8. Last I heard, they're quality was horrible and getting worst, but that could be wrong.

Thanks I'll jump onto this for sure, what hardware will I need?
Depending on who you go with, you don't need any hardware. There's softphones (aka software that you use as a phone) which you can use with a mic and headset. If you want an actual phone, then you'll need a cisco ATA(Other companies besides cisco make them too.) Some providers will make you use theirs or "loan" them to you, you can find them for a decent price on ebay.

What's with you and skype? Anyway I use a VOIP service through my local ISP. My plan is unlimted usage for $25 per month. I have a fixed wireless connection so my service is probably down at least 1 day a month for various reasons. As for the 911 issue, I just keep a phone plugged into a wall jack. For 25 a month you can't beat it though, no high ass bills, nothing. I like it.
