2-0-Sixx @2-0-Sixx great points, no argument there. What are your thoughts on Hawkins saying humans only have 100 years left on this planet ? Do you think his opinion on the subject holds weight ?

I was forced to go to church but not forced to believe in the Bible. I have orthodox Christians, Catholic, baptists, jehovas witness lol all in my immediate family. If I absolutely had to pick a religion it'd be Buddhism. ReSpawn @ReSpawn

I think he's right that we do need to begin colonizing another planet relatively soon, why keep all of our eggs in one basket, but I'm not sure his 100 years is based on anything. In November he said 1,000 years, now he's saying 100. Maybe he didn't get the kind of reaction he wanted and that 1,000 years might as well be 100,000 years to most people (it's hard to wrap our heads around a thousand years), a hundred years is much more "real" and emphasis we may not have much time.

As far as I can tell it's not based on any real numbers, we just have a lot of growing problems (population, climate change, etc.).

The idea of colonizing other planets always gives me flashbacks of scenes from Total Recall...most notably the scene where we saw what breathing in that good ol' martian air does to the human body. Since the human body is optimized to live on planet earth, I wonder what long term effects another planet's gravity/atmosphere would have on the immune system, skeletal system, lifespan, ability to heal from injury, etc...

Right, there's definitely some hurdles and many people think Mars may not be the best planet.

A lot of people years ago thought Venus was Earth 2.0. Then we started learning about the harsh conditions. And in the 60s and 70s, The Soviets sent a bunch of rockets to Venus, a couple landed and sent pictures back before being destroyed:

So we learned it's too harsh with sulfur acid raining from the sky. One crazy idea though is colonizing Venus in the clouds. The Venerian atmosphere it's perfect. So at an altitude of about 31 miles above Venerian ground, the environment is the most Earth-like in the Solar System, conditions already a nice 72° and there would be natural protection against cosmic radiation provided by the atmosphere above, with shielding mass equivalent to Earths.

So the idea is to create floating cities.

I still like the idea of Mars the best but thinking outside the box is good
