US wants to build missile defence system on Czech-Polish soil

The leaders of the Czech Republic and Poland say they are in favour of letting the US build parts of its missile defence system on their soil.
Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek said he agreed with his Polish counterpart that they would probably respond positively to a US request.

The US wants to build a missile interceptor site in Poland and a radar station in the Czech Republic.

Russia has condemned the plan, saying it will be able to target the sites.

"If the governments of Poland and the Czech Republic take a decision to this effect, the strategic missile troops will be capable of having these facilities as targets," said Gen Nikolai Solovtsov, commander of Russia's missile forces.

The US says the missile defence in Central Europe is designed to guard against possible missile attacks from the Middle East or North Korea.

Political battle

Both Mr Topolanek and Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski stressed that the missiles would not be directed against Russia. They were speaking after talks in Warsaw on Monday.

Mr Topolanek could still struggle to get the plan approved by both houses of the Czech parliament, correspondents say.

His three-party, centre-right governing coalition recently won a vote of confidence, but controls just 100 of 200 seats in the lower house.

There is opposition to the scheme in the Czech Republic, protesters having recently rallied against it in Prague.

There is also public opposition in Poland to the plan.

The US has already built missile interceptor sites in Alaska and in California, but says it needs to expand into Europe to counter growing threats from further afield.

this is the reason why they want to build those missile defense system in those countries..easy for them to reach Iran/N.K.

Well ya mentioned it, lol, i mean wouldn't it be too hard to reach n/k from czech-polish soil?



the california would not be very far from n.k. on the right side...

1. Is the world flat? Why would you use a flat map to try and determine missile trajectory when the world is round? Use a globe!


2. Why would the U.S. shoot a missile from California to North Korea? Do you know where Alaska is?


3. Is the earth a stationary object or is it constantly rotating? If you shot an object at a target that was rotating do you think a straight line is the best way to hit it?


4. Missile Defense systems are first strike weapons.


5. Missile launches from the U.S. to Russia, for example, go over the arctic not east or west around the world.

Ah, hmm well when'd I mention the world was flat? Well, why not use the world map? Why not California? Yes, I meant about missile going over the sea. Ah well, I guess I didn't think outside of geography this time, lol

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow sees the establishment of the missile defense sites as a signal that the United States wants to gain nuclear superiority over Russia. He dismissed U.S. claims that it was to counter Iranian threats.


``If they talk about potential threats coming from Iran or North Korea, missile defense elements should be located in a different place,'' Lavrov said in an interview published Wednesday in the daily Rossiyskaya Gazeta. ``We can't help noting that these facilities would be capable of intercepting missiles launched from Russia.''


Lavrov said that having the ability to shoot down Russian missiles could allow the United States to consider the possibility of a nuclear strike on Russia without fear of retaliation.


He referred to the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) Treaty that Washington quit in order to develop missile defenses, saying that it banned missile defense systems on the assumption that the fear of retaliation would prevent each nation from launching a first strike.


``Since protection from the first strike would be guaranteed, as American strategists apparently expect, another temptation arises - to be the first to launch a strike, aware that a chance has emerged to go unpunished,'' Lavrov said.
