How is UCSD so high up there?
X_KaLiBa provided that answer on the first page:

that ranking system is probably based mostly on research, funding, academic resources, faculty, etc., and takes into account all the different schools within the universities (undergrad, grad, professional)...cal has all that...if you take a look at grad school rankings, cal is in the top 10 in damn near most programs (just like harvard, stanford, and mit)

the other rankings you more commonly see are more undergrad-centered and based more on admissions selectivity, quality of undergrad education (class size, etc.), financial aid, in addition to some of the other factors mentioned above

^what you make at an early age really depends on what you major in and what field you're working in...trust me................

edit: that was to madddog
I dont know about that. My major averages about 33k and not to brag but I make WELL over that. Then again, I went to a average to below average school, so I guess the argument that a degree is just a piece of paper does hold some weight.

how long since you've graduated though? as a counterexample, i make about 33k/year fresh out of college (w/ very good grades at very good schools)...if i had gone into industry with my major and experience, i could make 40-50k tops...but if i had majored in and found a job in some engineering or business-related discipline, i could easily be making 70k+...that diploma is important, but so are those other factors when it comes to one's starting salary, as im sure you realize

It is crazy to look at some of this stuff. I think cal accepts like 23% of the applicants and Harvard and Yale accept like 12%. I looked a lot into this when I was transfering. I was just happy to get into the #1 college in the country for my major.

Nan of that shit means shit in the real world. Wait, reverse that, it may help one find a better job rit out of college, but from then on it's how you produce at a job (If you ain't doin' shit for your employer your degree from columbia means nothing). There are hella people that have undergraduate and graduate degrees from prestigous colleges that are working for or under people that have basic degrees from no name schools (less note worthy ones). YADADASEEME???
