June 8: Tony Todd Talks CANDYMAN 4 and more!

Just prior to his Burbank Weekend of Horrors panel for SHADOW: DEAD RIOT, scripted by Fango’s own Michael Gingold, we caught up with actor Tony Todd, who filled us in on a number of his upcoming projects—including a possible fourth in the CANDYMAN franchise! “There are rumors about another CANDYMAN,” Todd tells Fango. “It’s a ‘vs.’ film. I don’t know if it’s going to be Chucky or who!” Todd laughs and continues, “If it’s Chucky, I’m gonna…” He makes a kicking motion and offers a wide smile.

Todd, who continues to tackle a diverse variety of roles in both film and television, continues, “I just finished working on [TV’s] STARGATE—another one for the space fans. They have this new race of people [on the show] called the Priors, and the production built an $800,000 village set up in Vancouver for them, so it looks like I’ll be around for a while!” Look for Todd to appear in five new episodes of STARGATE, debuting in July.

As for fright films, Todd is set to tackle another icon who shares many of the tragic and romantic elements that made the Candyman so memorable. “I’m getting ready to do JEKYLL AND HYDE,” reveals Todd in his signature baritone. “It’s an updated version written for me by John Buechler, who runs an FX company here.” In addition to his collaboration with Buechler on JEKYLL, Todd recently wrapped shooting on Adam Green’s HATCHET, on which Buechler provided the splatter FX, co-starring Robert Englund and Kane Hodder.

Never content to remain in one genre, however, Todd has other projects on the way that reflect his more nurturing side. “I love CANDYMAN, but I like to do different things, y’know? I’m getting ready to do a film called MERCY STREET, on the 10th of June. It’s a coming-of-age story like SEARCHING FOR BOBBY FISCHER. I’ll also be doing a movie called TOURNAMENT OF DREAMS, where I play a coach for a girls’ basketball team.”

Portraying a b-ball coach isn’t apparently as challenging as Todd’s other current role—that of fatherhood. States Todd, “I’m raising my son. I received custody since I saw you last, but he’s not here today. He’s not into it [the convention]. Have you ever tried to raise a 16-year old boy? I asked him if wanted to come, but he’s not into this. Y’know, to him I’m ‘Dad,’ so he’s like, ‘Whatever.’ ” At this, Fango relates a recent conversation with Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx’s children, who expressed the same feelings regarding their father’s “hipness.” Todd laughs, as he knows Sixx personally from his work opposite the rocker’s wife Donna D’Errico on CANDYMAN: DAY OF THE DEAD. He responds sarcastically, “Yeah, he’s not cool; long hair, married to Donna—no, not cool!” —Sean Decker and Jack Ulrich
