SANTA CLARA -- Three inmates escaped from the minimum-security Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas early Sunday morning, according to the Santa Clara County Department of Correction. The three men are considered unarmed and non-violent. They are believed to have escaped sometime between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. by scaling two 14-foot high perimeter fences, according to corrections authorities. The fugitives have been identified as Antonio Landa, 21, and Florentino Ramirez, 36, both of Mountain View, and Carlos Garcia, 25, of San Jose. All three men had been serving time for non-violent criminal convictions and were scheduled to be released in the coming weeks, according to corrections authorities. Landa is 5 feet 9 inches tall, 160 pounds, with black hair, brown eyes and a tattoo of an "A" on his left hand. He was taken into custody March 20 for felony charges of auto theft, possession of stolen property and several misdemeanor charges. He was scheduled to be released Sept. 19. Ramirez is 5 feet 6 inches tall, 180 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. He had been in custody since April 11 for a charge of misdemeanor drunken driving and misdemeanor narcotics charges. He was scheduled to be released Oct. 6. Garcia is 5 feet 6 inches tall, 140 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and a "BYCC" tattoo on his chest and left arm. He had been in custody since June 14 for misdemeanor drunken driving with a suspended license and was scheduled to be released Oct. 6. According to the Department of Correction, this morning's escape is the first escape in more than five years. The last escape occurred in July 2001. The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department and the Milpitas Police are looking for the three fugitives. Elmwood Correctional Facility officials will be conducting an internal investigation as well.
